United Nations Report on International Trade features MDX Dubai

The first edition of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Days in the Arab States Report has been published. This publication reflects a landmark initiative across the region, and Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai is proud to have played a role in its success.As part of this global UN initiative, MDX Dubai had the honour of hosting the UAE edition of UNCITRAL Days through the JURIS Centre, the university’s legal education and excellence hub.The event, held on Saturday 9 November 2024, brought together distinguished figures from the legal profession, academia, and policymaking sectors to engage in meaningful dialogue on the evolving landscape of international arbitration.It marked the 10th anniversary of the UNCITRAL Rules on Transparency and included panel discussions on the complex interplay between transparency and confidentiality in arbitration. Speakers explored the delicate balance between ensuring openness in arbitral proceedings and preserving the discretion often required in sensitive disputes.The report also features the Code of Conduct for Arbitrators, exploring its key obligations and its role in promoting ethical consistency and integrity in arbitration practice.MDX Dubai’s involvement in this initiative enhances the university’s international reputation and shows its commitment to being a proactive academic partner in global legal development.Yasmin Sebah, Senior Law Lecturer at MDX Dubai, said: “As arbitration continues to gain traction as the mechanism of choice for resolving international investment and commercial disputes across the Arab region, hosting the UNCITRAL Day at Middlesex University Dubai could not have been timelier. Moot Court Competition 2025 allows MDX Dubai Students to Shine

Law students from Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai made an outstanding debut at the recent International Bar Association (IBA) Moot Court Competition 2025. The competition, held at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, from 11 to 18 June, serves as a platform for law students worldwide to deepen their understanding of international criminal law and the workings of the ICC.Organised annually, it provides students with a unique opportunity to engage with pressing issues in international criminal law and demonstrate their legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.Competing for the very first time at one of the most prestigious international law competitions in the world, the MDX Dubai team advanced to the quarterfinals, placing them among the top 27 teams out of 127 global participants.This remarkable accomplishment was made even more special as the team was awarded 2nd Runner-Up for Best Newcomer Team, a title recognising the most promising first-time entrants. Team member Agnes Mariyam Biju earned 2nd Runner-Up Best Defence Counsel Speaker, a significant personal achievement which showcased the team's advocacy strength.The team representing Middlesex University Dubai also included Sreelakshmy Arun, Sergei Asikyan, Rasul Isaev and Musfira Shareen.Their preparation and performance were guided by Deena Bhoyroo, Senior Law Lecturer, MDX Dubai, whose mentorship and commitment were instrumental in the team’s success.MDX Dubai’s strong debut highlights the quality of the law programme and the benefits of strong industry collaborations. United Nations Recognise Middlesex University Dubai for SDG Operations

The Institute of Sustainable Development (ISD) from Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai have successfully completed the prestigious UN Global Compact SDG Ambition Accelerator. This transformative, months-long, initiative empowers organisations to embed the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their core strategies and operations.The achievement was recognised at a ceremony on 3 June 2025 at the Emirates Towers in Dubai, with MDX Dubai represented by head of ISD and Senior Marketing Lecturer Andrew Mackenzie, Marketing Lecturer Rebecca Rich, and Senior Business Lecturer Rhoderick Romano.The event took place as part of the Voluntary National Review, a country-led process to assess and present national progress on the SDGs. The SDG Ambition Accelerator challenges institutions and businesses to move beyond incremental change, encouraging bold, strategic action aimed at achieving long-term resilience and sustainable growth. Participating organisations are guided through a process of assessing their current performance, setting ambitious SDG-aligned targets, and activating integrated strategies to lead systemic transformation.This effort directly supports the Forward Faster initiative, a global call to action that urges the private sector to accelerate progress on the 2030 SDG targets with urgency and measurable impact. The ceremony featured inputs from His Excellency Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Experience Exchange; Ibrahim Al Zubi, Senior Vice President of Sustainability and Climate at ADNOC and Vice Chairman of the UN Global Compact UAE; as well as senior executives from PwC, the UAE National Committee on SDGs, and over 100 participating organisations.MDX Dubai continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability through a range of initiatives led by the ISD. The law department at Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai hosted its third annual awards night, bringing together an inspiring evening of celebration, recognition, and reflection on the year’s achievements.The event, held at MDX Dubai’s Dubai Knowledge Park campus on 29 May, was attended by industry professionals, academic staff, proud parents, and students, all united in honouring the exceptional talent within the university’s legal community.This year’s ceremony showcased a notable rise in student participation in competitions. Student Researchers from MDX Dubai Earn Top Honours

Students from Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai showcased their talent and expertise at the 12th Annual Undergraduate Research and Innovation Competition (URIC), hosted by Abu Dhabi University on 29 May 2025. The competition drew over 650 submissions from students across 105 universities and 14 countries. Following a rigorous selection process, top projects were shortlisted to present in front of panels of expert judges across 27 academic disciplines.MDX Dubai made an impression at the competition, submitting over 30 research and innovation entries, of these, an impressive 24 projects were shortlisted for final presentation, a testament to the university’s emphasis on nurturing critical thinking, creativity, and academic excellence. The students delivered well-prepared and compelling presentations, showcasing a wide range of topics spanning education, psychology, AI, health, and more. Among the standout achievements, three MDX Dubai students earned top three positions in their respective categories.Education student Malak AlHajry won first place in the Education & Instructional Technologies track for her research titled “The Perceived Impact of Screen Exposure on Young Children's Inhibitory Control: Teachers' and Parents' Perspectives in the UAE.”Reflecting on her win, Malak said: “When I heard the title of my paper and my university being called, it felt like a moment out of a fairytale. I’m so proud to represent Middlesex University, which believed in me and nurtured me every step of the way.”Afrin Fathima Razvi, a Computer Engineering and Informatics student, secured third place in the same track. Afrin presented her innovative project titled "Intellectus: A Fine-Tuned LLM To Enhance Student Cognitive Performance, Foster Independent Reasoning, Reinforce Academic Integrity, and Mitigate AI Over-Reliance in Education." Afrin said: “The quality of the participants' research reminded me that innovation is all about defending your ideas against brilliant minds. It genuinely felt like walking into a room full of tomorrow’s inventors arguing with today’s limits.”Layana Shunnar, a psychology student took third place in the Psychology category for her research project titled “Smoking Cessation for University Students." Layana said: “I appreciated the opportunity to attend and present at the competition. I enjoyed it immensely and would not have done it without the university’s support.”The competition marked the culmination of months of preparation, dedication, and collaboration by MDX Dubai students and their supervisors, with special support from the university’s Office of Student Research, led by Dr Lynda Hyland.Professor Fehmida Hussain, Deputy Director Engagement and Student Experience, Head of the Middlesex Innovation Hub, said: “At Middlesex University Dubai, we are proud to champion student research and innovation. The Institute of Sustainable Development (ISD) from Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai have successfully completed the prestigious UN Global Compact SDG Ambition Accelerator. This transformative, months-long, initiative empowers organisations to embed the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their core strategies and operations.The achievement was recognised at a ceremony on 3 June 2025 at the Emirates Towers in Dubai, with MDX Dubai represented by head of ISD and Senior Marketing Lecturer Andrew Mackenzie, Marketing Lecturer Rebecca Rich, and Senior Business Lecturer Rhoderick Romano.The event took place as part of the Voluntary National Review, a country-led process to assess and present national progress on the SDGs. The SDG Ambition Accelerator challenges institutions and businesses to move beyond incremental change, encouraging bold, strategic action aimed at achieving long-term resilience and sustainable growth. Participating organisations are guided through a process of assessing their current performance, setting ambitious SDG-aligned targets, and activating integrated strategies to lead systemic transformation.This effort directly supports the Forward Faster initiative, a global call to action that urges the private sector to accelerate progress on the 2030 SDG targets with urgency and measurable impact. The ceremony featured inputs from His Excellency Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Experience Exchange; Ibrahim Al Zubi, Senior Vice President of Sustainability and Climate at ADNOC and Vice Chairman of the UN Global Compact UAE; as well as senior executives from PwC, the UAE National Committee on SDGs, and over 100 participating organisations.MDX Dubai continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability through a range of initiatives led by the ISD. The law department at Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai hosted its third annual awards night, bringing together an inspiring evening of celebration, recognition, and reflection on the year’s achievements.The event, held at MDX Dubai’s Dubai Knowledge Park campus on 29 May, was attended by industry professionals, academic staff, proud parents, and students, all united in honouring the exceptional talent within the university’s legal community.This year’s ceremony showcased a notable rise in student participation in competitions. Student Researchers from MDX Dubai Earn Top Honours

Students from Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai showcased their talent and expertise at the 12th Annual Undergraduate Research and Innovation Competition (URIC), hosted by Abu Dhabi University on 29 May 2025. The competition drew over 650 submissions from students across 105 universities and 14 countries. Following a rigorous selection process, top projects were shortlisted to present in front of panels of expert judges across 27 academic disciplines.MDX Dubai made an impression at the competition, submitting over 30 research and innovation entries, of these, an impressive 24 projects were shortlisted for final presentation, a testament to the university’s emphasis on nurturing critical thinking, creativity, and academic excellence. The students delivered well-prepared and compelling presentations, showcasing a wide range of topics spanning education, psychology, AI, health, and more. Among the standout achievements, three MDX Dubai students earned top three positions in their respective categories.Education student Malak AlHajry won first place in the Education & Instructional Technologies track for her research titled “The Perceived Impact of Screen Exposure on Young Children's Inhibitory Control: Teachers' and Parents' Perspectives in the UAE.”Reflecting on her win, Malak said: “When I heard the title of my paper and my university being called, it felt like a moment out of a fairytale. I’m so proud to represent Middlesex University, which believed in me and nurtured me every step of the way.”Afrin Fathima Razvi, a Computer Engineering and Informatics student, secured third place in the same track. Afrin presented her innovative project titled "Intellectus: A Fine-Tuned LLM To Enhance Student Cognitive Performance, Foster Independent Reasoning, Reinforce Academic Integrity, and Mitigate AI Over-Reliance in Education." Afrin said: “The quality of the participants' research reminded me that innovation is all about defending your ideas against brilliant minds. It genuinely felt like walking into a room full of tomorrow’s inventors arguing with today’s limits.”Layana Shunnar, a psychology student took third place in the Psychology category for her research project titled “Smoking Cessation for University Students." Layana said: “I appreciated the opportunity to attend and present at the competition. I enjoyed it immensely and would not have done it without the university’s support.”The competition marked the culmination of months of preparation, dedication, and collaboration by MDX Dubai students and their supervisors, with special support from the university’s Office of Student Research, led by Dr Lynda Hyland.Professor Fehmida Hussain, Deputy Director Engagement and Student Experience, Head of the Middlesex Innovation Hub, said: “At Middlesex University Dubai, we are proud to champion student research and innovation.
