  • Tuesday, 1 July 2025

The first edition of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Days in the Arab States Report has been published. This publication reflects a landmark initiative across the region, and Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai is proud to have played a role in its success.

As part of this global UN initiative, MDX Dubai had the honour of hosting the UAE edition of UNCITRAL Days through the JURIS Centre, the university’s legal education and excellence hub.

The event, held on Saturday 9 November 2024, brought together distinguished figures from the legal profession, academia, and policymaking sectors to engage in meaningful dialogue on the evolving landscape of international arbitration.

It marked the 10th anniversary of the UNCITRAL Rules on Transparency and included panel discussions on the complex interplay between transparency and confidentiality in arbitration. Speakers explored the delicate balance between ensuring openness in arbitral proceedings and preserving the discretion often required in sensitive disputes.

The report also features the Code of Conduct for Arbitrators, exploring its key obligations and its role in promoting ethical consistency and integrity in arbitration practice.

MDX Dubai’s involvement in this initiative enhances the university’s international reputation and shows its commitment to being a proactive academic partner in global legal development.

Yasmin Sebah, Senior Law Lecturer at MDX Dubai, said: “As arbitration continues to gain traction as the mechanism of choice for resolving international investment and commercial disputes across the Arab region, hosting the UNCITRAL Day at Middlesex University Dubai could not have been timelier. This event offered a vital platform to engage with legal developments and the future of international arbitration in a rapidly evolving legal landscape.”

Professor Tenia Kyriazi, Deputy Director of Teaching & Learning, Law and Sciences Head of Law and Politics at MDX Dubai, said: “It was an honour to host the UAE UNCITRAL Day for Arab States here at Middlesex University Dubai. UNCITRAL’s initiatives have long been instrumental in enhancing legal certainty and stability for cross-border transactions, which are crucial for economic growth in the Arab region.

“We want to express our gratitude to UNCITRAL for partnering with us and to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the distinguished speakers, partners and students who contributed to the engaging discussions.”
