Middlesex University Dubai inks MOUs with Hunton Andrews Kurth and AWS Legal Consultancy in boost to pro bono initiative
- Monday, 28 November 2022
As part of Middlesex University Dubai’s Law and Politics Department’s commitment to bridging academia with practice through its pro bono initiative, the University has signed two MOUs with international law firm Hunton Andrews Kurth (HAK) and leading local firm AWS Legal Consultancy (AWS). The MOUs were signed on Monday 28th November 2022 alongside the launch of JURIS Centre of Excellence for Legal Education and Training at the University’s Dubai Knowledge Park campus.
David Pang, Partner (Solicitor) at HAK, and Aws M. Younus, Chairman at AWS, were in attendance to represent their organisations. Dr Tenia Kyriazi, Deputy Director Academic Operations, Head of Law and Politics and Dr Daphne Demetriou, Senior Lecturer, Campus Programme Coordinator – Postgraduate Law and Politics, both faculty members at Middlesex University Dubai, facilitated the partnerships with these prominent industry players.
The University’s pro bono initiative engages law students with pro bono legal advice, supporting the lawyers of the two firms through research and drafting, as well other activities to raise awareness of the firms’ pro bono services and advance the importance of pro bono legal services in Dubai.
The initiative aligns with Middlesex University’s global Strategy to 2031, which aims to create knowledge and put it into action to benefit students and society. These MOUs are part of the department’s overarching Pro Bono Project, which utilises collaboration with different law firms and leading institutions to enhance students’ practice-based learning whilst supporting the wider community in Dubai. Their engagement with both local and international law firms aims at exposing students to both DIFC and UAE laws.
