Computer Engineering and Informatics students explore STEM careers during 2022 Career Day

  • Friday, 20 May 2022

The Computer Engineering and Informatics department (CEI) at Middlesex University Dubai hosted the virtual Career Day on May 12th 2022, with more than 100 students from CEI attending the hugely successful event.

An exciting and informative presentation on Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies was given by Mr. Shreenath Iyer, CMO, Digital Financial Exchange (DIFX). We also had a fantastic series of insightful guest speaker talks thereafter by Amir Shalaby, Senior Business Manager at Amazon; Nikin Mohan James, Training and Support Manager at Falcon Eye Drones (FEDS); Neil D’Souza, Regional Sales Manager, Google India; and Vanessa Fernandes, Senior Manager-Data & AI, Capgemini-UK.

An informative panel discussion on “Career Insights” with some of our MDX Alumni from the industry added another dimension to the Career Day. The expert panelists were Maryam Lawan Gwadabe, Founder of Blue Sapphire Hub in Nigeria; Nikhil Suresh, King’s College London; Otobong Friday, Marine (Data) Analyst at Jotun Middle East, India & Africa; Bittu Scaria, Robotics Engineer, R&D at STRATA Manufacturing PJSC and MDX Visiting Lecturer; and Ansu Anish, Data Scientist at National Paints.

The panelists spoke about their current roles and responsibilities, how they found their niche, how their professional journey has progressed so far after graduating from Middlesex, and also shared their own experiences in the industry. They discussed the big trends that students need to keep their eyes on that could directly impact their career, their education, and the skills that are required for success in the career. The session was moderated by our third-year BEng student, Zaida Kodzoeva.

The students then took part in virtual networking sessions with notable companies such as AHAD, Apparel Group, BDP International, Expert Hub Robotics, Publicis Sapient, DIFX, Falcon Eye Drones, and Spire Solutions DMCC. The companies shared insights on the current job market and the skills needed to succeed. The speakers also provided employability advice and different internship opportunities to our MDX CEI students.

The Career Fair was a tremendous success and as one of our MSc Cybersecurity and Pen Testing students, Prithvi Shah, said: “I had a really good experience.”

It seems the Career Fair has created a positive impact on our CEI student community.

Our students had been trained and prepared well for this event ahead of time through the career workshops and preparatory sessions delivered by the Careers and Employability Services (CES) team. The team help all sutdents across the University to boost their skills in areas such as:

  • Resume and Cover Letter Writing
  • Building a powerful LinkedIn profile networking
  • Interview techniques
  • Participating in mock interviews
  • Job searching
  • Creating a career action plan

Dr Fehmida Hussain, Head of Computer Engineering and Informatics, said: “Thank you to everyone involved in making the Career Day a grand success! Starting with thanks to our distinguished speakers, guests, and alumni for taking out their time for engaging with and inspiring our students.

“Thank you also to our CES colleagues, especially Dr Lynda Hyland and Amanda Fernandes, who went above and beyond to plan and organize the CEI Career Fair. A huge shout out also goes to to Madhumita Das, the Career Liaison for CEI department, who not only was a great resource for organising this event but also supporting and career counseling our students throughout the year.”
