MDX Dubai hosts Virtual 17th International Conference on Intelligent Environments

  • Thursday, 24 June 2021

On 21-24 June 2021, our Computer Engineering and Informatics department hosted the Virtual 17th International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE2021). This is a highly prestigious technology conference and recognised as a major annual event in this area of research.

The conference consisted of a packed agenda involving tutorials, workshops, full papers and short papers. We hosted an accompanying Industrial Forum where we welcomed senior scientists, academicians, young researchers, industry partners and students from all over the world.

We were honoured to have Professor Edward A. Lee, Robert S. Pepper Distinguished Professor Emeritus at UC Berkeley, USA and Bharathan Balaji, Research Scientist at Amazon as the conference’s keynote speakers.

The IE2021 conference welcomed submissions of original papers on all aspects of Intelligent Environments, ranging from concepts and theoretical developments to advanced technologies and innovative applications. All submissions were thoroughly reviewed by 2 or 3 independent reviewers from an international committee composed of members from both industry and academia.

During the first two days, the following workshops were held: the 3rd International Workshop on Intelligent Environments and Buildings (IEB ’21); the 10th International Workshop on the Reliability of Intelligent Environments (WORIE ‘21); the 1st International Workshop on Self-Learning in Intelligent Environments (SeLIE ’21); and the 1st International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Emerging Topics (ALLEGET ‘21).

In addition, the technical and scientific programme also included six tutorials given by renowned experts on topics such as AI and cloud computing, the role of Internet of Things in home automation, and the use of technology in heritage management.

There were 3 awards presented at the conference:

  • Best Short Paper: “Experimenting a Healthy Ageing Community in Immersive Virtual Reality Environment: The Case of World's Longest-lived Populations” by Peyman Najafi, Masi Mohammadi, Pascale M. Le Blanc and Pieter Van Wesemael
  • Best Full Paper: “GRETA: Pervasive and AR interfaces for Controlling Intelligent Greenhouses” by Iraklis Bekiaris, Asterios Leonidis, Maria Korozi, Christos Stratakis, Emmanouil Zidianakis, Maria Doxastaki and Constantine Stephanidis
  • Beatrice Worsley Award for the Best Female Researcher – Masi Mohammadi

We are grateful to our sponsors and cooperating organisations – Middlesex University London; Sapienza Università di Roma; Université Grenoble Alpes; Queensland University of Technology; IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society; IOS Press; the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI); TII – Technology Innovation Institute; and EPSON – for their support.
