Faculty Focus Q&A
Rory McConnon joined Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai in September 2016 and has since become a Senior Lecturer and Campus Programme Coordinator for Undergraduate Business Management and International Business programmes.
Prior to working at MDX Dubai, Rory worked in energy efficiency and renewable energy for twelve years in Ireland. He is currently engaged in PhD research on the contribution of vertical farming to sustainable food systems in the United Arab Emirates.
Beyond work, he loves travelling and has visited over 70 countries so far. On 8 May 2025, followers of MDX Dubai’s Instagram had the opportunity to ask him anything about business, programme information or anything else MDX related.
Below are some of his answers!
What careers can you go into with a business degree?
Graduates of the BA Honours Business Management programmes will find employment in a wide range of sectors including: accounting, advertising, brand management, banking, investment and many more.
What business programmes do MDX have?
We run 13 undergraduate business programmes and pathways. Our Business Management programme offers 11 different pathways, we also offer BA Honours Marketing and BA Honours International Business; you can view the full programme list on our website.
Any tips for those joining in from September intake?
When you join in September, make the most out of our academic inductions, and go to our week of welcome sessions to find out about all the clubs, activities, events, and student support available at the university.
How should I prepare before joining one of your business programmes?
Before you join, stay updated – for global business, head to Reuters, CNBC, The Economist and the Financial Times. For local updates listen to the Bitesize Business Breakfast podcast from Dubai Eye.
What skills or experiences do employers value most in business graduates right now?
Knowledge and understanding of current business issues, such as applying AI to business solutions and incorporating sustainability into business practices, are becoming increasingly important.
Do you think pursuing an internship during your studies is becoming more important?
In most cases, pursuing an internship or part-time job during your studies is more beneficial than focusing solely on academics, although it is important to balance both effectively.
Graduate employers value practical real-world experience alongside knowledge, so work experience, especially during semester breaks, is a great way to make your CV stand out.
What is your favourite module to teach?
I love teaching innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainability as well as business strategy. So luckily, I teach a module called Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Sustainability, and another called International Business Strategy.
