Living Your Best ‘Sustainable’ Life at MDX Dubai

Sustainable living and an eco-friendly lifestyle are about making choices that reduce your environmental impact and help preserve resources for future generations. Here are some key principles and actions that contribute to living sustainably that can be adopted whilst at university. At MDX Dubai we embrace sustainable living and encourage all our students to do so too.
Energy Conservation: If you are shopping for new appliances, consider looking for energy-efficient models, and consider things such as LED light bulbs and appliances with high energy ratings. Remember to turn off unused lights and electronics to minimise your energy consumption, including your phone charger when your phone is not plugged in!
Waste Reduction: Reduce, reuse, and recycle: Focus on purchasing products with minimal packaging, reuse items when possible, and recycle materials like paper, plastic, and glass. MDX Dubai have branded water bottles and lots of stations around campus where you can fill up. Consider making your own lunches and bring in with reusable Tupperware’s, and remember to print only when you have to as many documents can be worked on electronically. For more information see Middlesex University Dubai’s New Recycling Programme in Partnership with Enviroserve launched at Middlesex University Dubai.
Water Conservation: Limit water usage by taking shorter showers when possible, without impacting on your own personal hygiene. Making sure you always turn off taps fully after using as even a dropping tap can contribute to a huge volume of water wastage.
Sustainable Food Choices: A good way to stay eco-friendly with food, is to eat local and organic: Local food doesn’t have the carbon footprint of items that are shipped long distances. Organic farming also tends to use fewer pesticides and chemicals. Dubai boasts a number of specialty organic stores and cafes such as GreenHeart Organic Farms, Organic Foods & Café, and the Bio Organic Store. You could consider implementing a few plant-based days per week: reducing meat consumption, especially beef, can significantly reduce your environmental impact, as livestock farming is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.
Transportation: Walk, bike, or use public transport to reduce reliance on fossil-fueled vehicles. Carpool or use ride-sharing services to lower emissions. If one of your classmates have a car, you could suggest you travel to university together. On-Demand Ride Services such as Uber do offer pooled transport service options too!
Middlesex University Dubai offers an efficient student transportation shared bus service, to make sure students arrive safely and punctually to campus. It operates between Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Ajman. See Student Transportation Service | Middlesex University Dubai.
Eco-Friendly Products: Look for products made from eco-friendly materials like bamboo, glass, or recycled materials, for example toothbrushes and packaging. Avoid fast fashion and instead opt for clothing made from organic or sustainable fabrics, or secondhand items. Use natural cleaning supplies that don’t harm the environment or your health.
Supporting Green Initiatives: Choose companies that prioritise sustainability in their operations, products, and practices. You could even volunteer for our local environmental projects or participate in community clean-ups. Our Institute of Sustainable Development (ISD) department has worked In partnership with EnviroServe, to allow MDX Dubai students access to our new dry-waste recycling systems on campus.
By adopting even a few of these practices, you can significantly reduce your environmental footprint while contributing to a healthier planet. Every small action counts toward building a more sustainable world.
