- Wednesday, 22 January 2025
Dubai is a melting pot of cultures, offering an exciting and welcoming environment for students from around the world. Moving to a new country can feel daunting, but in Dubai, you'll quickly find a strong sense of community and a rich cultural tapestry.
The city comes alive throughout the year with an array of celebrations and festivals, from religious holidays like Eid and Diwali to global events like New Year’s Eve and cultural showcases. As a student, you'll have plenty of opportunities to get involved, learn about diverse traditions, and celebrate alongside your peers.
Here’s a guide to some of the major celebrations you’ll encounter in Dubai:
Diwali (October - November)
Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, is one of the most vibrant and widely celebrated festivals in Dubai, especially among the Indian community. The city is illuminated with beautiful lights, and you’ll see decorations and festive events, including food festivals and cultural performances. Students can take part in the celebrations by visiting Diwali markets, enjoying traditional performances, and attending cultural events hosted by local venues like Dubai Opera and cultural centres. Be sure to show respect for the holiday's spiritual aspects by learning about its deeper meanings of light, renewal, and good triumphing over evil.
Thanksgiving (4th Thursday in November)
Though Thanksgiving is primarily a US holiday, it is widely celebrated by American expats and international communities in Dubai. The day focuses on gratitude and spending time with loved ones. While you can enjoy Thanksgiving meals at various hotels and restaurants, many expats also host home-cooked meals or potlucks, which offer a wonderful chance to share food and build friendships.
As a student, you can join in by being a part of these gatherings or even hosting one yourself. It's a great opportunity to reflect on what you're thankful for and bond with others.
Christmas (December 25th)
Christmas in Dubai is a festive occasion embraced by both Christian expats and people from other faiths who enjoy the holiday cheer. The city, and campus, transforms into a winter wonderland with decorations, shopping markets, and special events. Students can get involved by attending concerts, holiday markets, and themed activities at popular malls like Mall of the Emirates or Dubai Festival City. You can also enjoy festive meals at restaurants, where traditional dishes such as roast turkey and mince pies are served.
Ramadan (Varies based on the Islamic lunar calendar)
Ramadan is a deeply spiritual time for Muslims and brings a peaceful, reflective atmosphere to the city. During this month, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset. While the days are dedicated to prayer and charity, the evenings are filled with community celebrations, especially around the breaking of the fast, known as Iftar. As a student, this is a perfect time to learn more about Islamic customs and participate in Iftar gatherings to experience the generosity and connection of the season. It’s also a great chance to be respectful of the culture by dressing modestly, refraining from eating or drinking in public, and showing sensitivity to the spiritual significance of the month. You can read our blog on how to balance studies, religious practices, and social activities during the holy month.
Eid al-Fitr (Varies based on the Islamic lunar calendar)
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and is a joyous time for celebration, family gatherings, and gratitude. The day begins with special prayers at mosques, followed by festive feasts and exchanges of gifts. Malls and restaurants offer special promotions, and fireworks light up the skies, making it a truly celebratory time. It’s customary to exchange gifts, so be sure to join in and embrace the spirit of giving and community.
Islamic New Year (Varies based on the Islamic lunar calendar)
The Islamic New Year is a time for reflection and spiritual renewal. Though the celebrations are quieter compared to other holidays, it is still a time for introspection and connecting with loved ones. As a student, you can get involved by visiting mosques for prayers and learning more about the importance of this day in Islamic culture. It’s a great opportunity to reflect on the passing year and appreciate the new beginnings ahead.
Eid AL Etihad (December 2nd)
Eid Al Etihad, or UAE National Day, is a patriotic celebration of the country's founding in 1971. Expect grand parades, military displays, and stunning airshows by the UAE's aerobatic team, Al Fursan. The streets will be adorned with the UAE flag, and landmarks such as the Burj Khalifa will light up in spectacular fireworks. Students can take part by attending the parades, enjoying cultural exhibitions, and supporting local businesses offering special discounts. This celebration is a fantastic way to learn about UAE’s rich heritage and to experience the country's unity and pride.
As a student in Dubai, you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in these diverse celebrations, each offering valuable lessons in culture, respect, and community. Whether you're enjoying the festive lights of Diwali, the spiritual atmosphere of Ramadan, the patriotic pride of UAE National Day, or the joyful feasts of Eid and Christmas, Dubai offers something for everyone. And at Middlesex University Dubai, these celebrations are embraced with enthusiasm by our diverse student body, making it a unique and vibrant place to study all year round
