Middlesex University Dubai Celebrates Its Longest-Serving Employee

  • Monday, 4 June 2018

Middlesex University Dubai prides itself on its staff and students who contribute to make it a renowned University in the UAE. End of May 2018, the University said goodbye to their first and longest-serving employee, Abdulla Kanhirakandiyil as he heads back to his hometown Kerala, India to retire and spend time with his family.

Middlesex University Dubai opened in 2005 as the first overseas campus of the internationally renowned Middlesex University in London. At this stage, the campus consisted of three floors within Block 16 of Knowledge Park with a total of 39 students enroling within the first year. During his role at the University, Abdulla was responsible for finding accommodation for students, maintenance of the Campus as well as assisting with transportation for staff and students.

Speaking of his journey at the University, Abdulla Kanhirakandiyil said, “During my time at the University I worked with over 500 members of staff from all over the world, enabling me to meet and learn from people from many different cultures. There was never any tension or stress, I was always happy to come to work every day.”

He further added, “I would especially like to thank the University for its continued support in employing my son as I retire. I hope he works hard and becomes a part of the team, pushing the University to great success.”

Since Abdulla joined Middlesex University Dubai, the University has gone from strength to strength with over 3,000 students from more than 100 different nationalities.

“Abdulla was one of the first members of staff when I joined the University back in 2007. Over the years, our wonderful colleague never changed – always polite, patient and supportive. Although I will miss his friendly face and gentle smile around the campus, I have no doubt that he will enjoy his well-deserved retirement in India, surrounded by his family” said Dragana Lekpek Symons, Student Activities Manager of Middlesex University Dubai.

Dr Cedwyn Fernandes, Director and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Middlesex University Dubai said “Abdulla is one of our most dedicated employee and staff and students will miss him. Following Abdulla's retirement, we are pleased to welcome his son on board as he joins the Middlesex Family. We wish Abdulla good health and a very happy retired life.”
