Technovation 5.0 showcases future of fintech leadership

  • Monday, 3 April 2023

Promoting a culture of innovation and research, Middlesex University Dubai hosted the fifth edition of the Fintech hackathon ‘Technovation 5.0’ on March 21 2023. Technovation is an excellent example of collaboration between the Computer, Engineering & Informatics (CEI) and Accounting and Finance (A&F) departments. This cross-discipline event inspires students to work on innovative ideas and enhances their student experience, putting ‘Knowledge into Action.’ The A&F students were able to gain insights about the use of technology in finance, whereas the CEI students learn about financial concepts and business planning.

Many students responded to the call for participants in November 2022. After going through rounds of advising and mentorship sessions conducted by Jaspreet Singh, Senior Lecturer Computer Engineering and Informatics, and other mentors, participating students worked in teams to explore ideas about offering new or improving existing financial services using emerging technologies. The finale was held on March 21, where many teams showcased their innovative prototypes to an esteemed panel of judges comprising of: Kavitha Fernandes, Head of Customer Solutions, Quality Assurance & Marketing at Al-Futtaim Logistics; Atif Ahmed, Senior Data Scientist, Emirates NBD; and Judhi Prasetyo, Lecturer Computer Engineering & Informatics.

This year’s Technovation winners are Farhan Mohammed Mansoor, Akshvin Uthesh, Satwick Mishra, and Mohamed Zaid Mohamed Faris, who presented the brilliant and innovative idea ‘Scholar Fund’, which aims to help the student community with university funding. Chirag Prakash Kherajani, Himanshu Kimtani, Mohammed Sohail and Syed Nasiruddinwere were declared as the runners-up for their project called ‘Streamlining the Pump’, which reduces the payment wait time at petrol stations.

We thank Al Futtaim Logistics for sponsoring the event and encouraging our students to build their practical knowledge and explore the benefits of cross-industry collaboration.

The event was conceived and organised by Dr Fehmida Hussain, Head of Computer Engineering and Informatics; Dr. Vijaya Kumar, Senior Lecturer Accounting and Finance; and Jaspreet Singh Sethi. Next step: Technovation 6.0 in 2024!
