ERPBSS 2011
- Wednesday, 1 June 2011
The First ERPBSS conference emerged from the ambitious initiative of the embryonic Middlesex University Dubai Research Committee. The objective of the conference was to provide an opportunity for academics to discuss new concepts, progressive methodologies, embryonic approaches and innovative practices within the world of business and the wider social environment. Given that social enquiry is still a maturing field of study within this region, it was seen as crucial that business systems, processes and structures were considered in conjunction with contributions from such contemporary fields of discourse as media studies, psychology, sociology and tourism education.
The event was held at a time when the UAE and, indeed, many parts of the world were just emerging from the debilitating recession which began in 2008. The aim was to stage a world class inter-disciplinary academic conference and create an unforgettable experience of academic exchange that builds upon the expertise and prestige of our university by using globally renowned key note speakers and cutting-edge research in one of the world’s most desirable locations.
It was a blazing success with around 200 international delegates from 100 institutions attended the conference. Our keynote speakers were truly world class and included; leading social scientist Professor John Urry and soft systems methodology pioneer Professor Peter Checkland. It was a very multi-disciplinary event and, true to its theme, focused on research paradigms over a vast spectrum of academic fields.
The event took place at the Pullman Hotel in the Mall of the Emirates. The venue was truly first class and at the time brand new. It was located right at the heart of the new Dubai, with direct links to the metro and airport, with a glorious view of the sea, with the best shopping in the world and even a snow ski resort within walking distance. All of these attractions of Dubai offered a perfect complement for the evening after the ‘heady’ academic discussions during the day!
