Summary of the Seminar
Nobel Prize in Literature
Annie Ernaux is awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for ‘the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory’. In her own words, she explains how she is ‘trying to be inside … To be there at that very instant, without spilling over into the before or after. To be in the pure immanence of a moment’. Her writing is heralded as a body of work that pushes back against the enduring restraints of class domination, to represent the working classes from within and unashamedly. Louise Edensor will share extracts from her writings to showcase this unique perspective.
Nobel Peace Prize
Attacks on press freedom, violation of civil rights and persecution of journalists and human rights activists has increased globally. Freedom of expression is a key human right. Nobel Peace Prize laureates like Maria Ressa and Dmitry Andreyevich Muratov have been awarded the Peace Prize “for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace” and Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad “for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict.” Mahine Rizvi Ahmad will share insights on the Nobel Peace Prize and those laureates who exemplify this struggle.
Nobel Prize in Economics
Ben S. Bernanke, Douglas W. Diamond and Philip H. Dybvig were awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics for their research on banks and financial crises. Unless one has avoided the modern banking system completely – whether as depositors or as borrowers – we have all benefitted from the contributions of the Laureates. Ajit Karnik will talk about the contributions of the Nobel Laureates and how their work has been influential in managing the problems faced by economies during the recession of 2008 and the COVID pandemic.
Look forward to seeing you at the seminar!
