“Towards Inclusive Impact in Research”

Nic Beech

Abstract

Around the world there has been an increased focus on the impact of research and the difference it makes outside academia. Traditional thinking on impact has taken a linear approach in which theories and research insight are generated in universities and these are then implemented by companies and organisations, often mediated through processes such as consultancy, product development and spin-outs. While these routes remain important, a recent focus has been on more inclusive and co-creative approaches in which research and practice are mutually engaged and influence each other. These inclusive approaches are based on particular understandings of types of practice-oriented research, forms of dialogue which connect practice and research and models of impact which include resonances beyond immediate outcomes such as social and methodological change. In this talk, Nic will discuss these issues along with examples from creative industries and broader research in Middlesex.
