“The influence of a learning organization in improving product quality performance: A moderated mediation model”

Jose Benedicto Duhaylongsod

Abstract

A learning organization, that is, one that adopts more opportunities to facilitate learning and leverage its learning outcomes, is essential for knowledge, innovation, and financial performance. However, little is known about how cultivating it can also promote product quality performance. This paper examines how and under what conditions a learning organization can influence product quality performance. We developed a theoretical model by integrating social information processing theory and social capital theory. This model proposes that a learning organization positively impacts product quality performance via internal integration and that employees’ supply chain management competencies amplify this relationship. We tested the model using a three-wave time-lagged survey from leaders in operations, production, supply chain, and logistics functions. The empirical findings show that learning organizations can significantly impact product quality performance via internal integration among different functions. Furthermore, the effect of being a learning organization on product quality performance is stronger when employees’ supply chain management competencies are higher. Our results highlight the importance of aligning organizational processes and employees’ competency development in driving cooperative work across functions and enhancing product quality performance.
