Wednesday Research Seminar Series    

We are pleased to invite you to our Wednesday Research Seminar. It will be held online on 27 January from 4pm via Microsoft team platform. Wednesday Research Seminar Series was launched in 2008, and has featured more than 285 presentations to date. The seminars provide a forum for researchers to share their work. Presenters include faculty from Middlesex University Dubai and other universities in the United Arab Emirates, as well as researchers from other global institutions. Neelofer and Vijaya will deliver seminar on:

Abstract    

The COVID-19 has created a strange natural experiment in children education. Families who would have never otherwise considered taking their kids out of school feel desperate enough to try it. Although some of these parents will likely put their kids back in school once the pandemic is under control, homeschooling advocates see this period as an unlikely opportunity to evangelize their way of life, which they describe as more flexible, creative, and adaptable to each student than traditional school. Homeschooling parents have lots of different reasons for wanting to educate their own kids. But they’re united in a common assessment: They want out of the traditional system. The question is whether COVID-19 will cause a temporary bump in homeschooling as parents’ piece together their days during the pandemic or mark a permanent inflection point in education that continues long after the virus has been controlled. Our research which is in its initial phase aims to explore whether and how the pandemic has influenced parents’ perspective on homeschooling. The study used parental involvement literature to conduct a pilot study to assess the impact of the pandemic on parental perception of homeschooling in the UAE. 

Biographies    

Neelofer Mashood is a senior lecturer at Middlesex University Dubai. She teaches Human Resource Management at the University’s Business School. She has a BSc and a MBA degree from Aligarh Muslim University, in India; an MA in Education in leadership Management and Change and a PG CertHE from Middlesex University and is a Fellow member of the HEA.  Neelofer has been teaching for over the last two decades and has supervised several Masters’ dissertations. She has published in the areas of Cross Culture Management; Localization policy; and Human Resource Management. She is a frequent reviewer for Pearson’s and frequently contributes case studies for their new text book publications in Organization Behaviour. Her current interests in research are in Education Policy and the Psychological Contract. 

Dr. Vijaya Kumar has received her PhD from Banasthali Vidhyapith University, India in 2013 in Financial management. She is a senior lecturer in Accounting and Finance at Middlesex University Dubai and has over two decades of experience in Higher Education in UAE. Vijaya has supervised several Masters’ dissertation and one PhD student. Her research interests are driven by her passion in the field of banking and finance, higher education and supply chain management. She has won several awards for innovation in teaching and student-centered learning. However, her passion is to promote the development of the student community. She is extensively involved in mentoring and guiding students for case study competitions at the regional and global level, which provides an opportunity for students to use their management and finance skills in a real-life situation; and her hard work has been recognized through several awards from internal and external professional bodies in UAE.
