Summary of the Seminar
Nobel Peace Prize
'Women - Life - Freedom' - the motto adopted by demonstrators in Iran
As 55 active conflicts continue to rage across the world, where governments continue to violate international law and international humanitarian law and where human rights continue to be violated, more so than ever before is there a need to amplify the voices of all those who continue to speak out.
The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Narges Mohammadi for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all. The prize also recognised the hundreds of thousands of people who have demonstrated against Iran’s theocratic regime’s policies of discrimination and oppression targeting women.
Nobel Prize in Economics
The Nobel Prize in Economics for 2023 was awarded to Professor Claudia Goldin “for having advanced our understanding of women’s labour market outcomes”. This was the first time that gender economics was being honoured with the Nobel. In the 55 years since the Nobel Prize in Economics as instituted there have been 93 laureates and only 3 have been women. Claudia Goldin has studied women’s participation in labour markets, gender earnings gap, and the role of marriage and parenthood in women’s earnings by carrying out a meticulous examination of 200 years of historical data.
