Andrew Mackenzie

Abstract

Environmental. Social and Governance (ESG) embodies the concept of sustainable development that integrates economic development, environmental protection, and social justice. A major part of ESG growth has been driven by the environmental component of ESG and responses to climate change, highlighted by the recent COP28 held in Dubai. However, the other components of ESG, in particular the social dimension, have been gaining prominence, and that is the focus on this study, to determine trends, patterns and barriers of ESG implementation in the MENA region. This study has interviewed experts across a diversity of industries has identified some consistent themes. Focusing on how organisations are incorporating ESG strategies and determining the main barriers to implementation in 2024 and undercovering what is driving the development of practices to meet the ‘race to zero’ targets set for 2030. The research identified what important technologies are most prominent, the largest barriers to ESG implementation, governance and sustainability reporting. Findings showed that for greater success, ESG needs to be built around creating shared value, and where companies have focused on creating value for all stakeholders, including shareholders, employees, customers, suppliers, and the environment, create a more sustainable and resilient business model.
