We are pleased to invite you to our Wednesday Research Seminar. It will be held online on 10 February from 4pm via Microsoft team platform. Wednesday Research Seminar Series was launched in 2008, and has featured more than 285 presentations to date. The seminars provide a forum for researchers to share their work. Presenters include faculty from Middlesex University Dubai and other universities in the United Arab Emirates, as well as researchers from other global institutions. Maha will deliver seminar on:

“Cyberthreat Analysis and Machine Learning”

Maha Saadeh

Abstract

Detailed investigations of cyber-attacks and threats reveal the fact that attackers or organizations that perform cyber-attacks use common attack patterns to trick targets. For this reason, security communities that develop defense strategies against cyber-attacks require intensive sharing and review of Cyber Threat Incident Reports (CTIR) in order to make these strategies more effective. Due to the large sizes of CTIR and the addition of new attacks, it is almost impossible for traditional methods in cyber-attack environment to identify characteristic signature of the performed attacks. Machine learning methods are useful in this context. Machine learning are used to capture statistical features in order to obtain an estimated output of threat characteristics. To improve the performance of these methods, a combination of deep learning and machine learning methods can be used to automatically extract the features from CTIRs. In this seminar I will talk about the Cyberthreats and Cybersecurity -impact, importance, and challenges- and the use of machine learning in cyberthreat analysis. In addition to that, I will present a recent research that we published related to cyberthreat analysis using machine learning.
