“Clinical Trials Registry: Does the UAE need one?"

Abstract

According to the World Health Organization, ‘‘the registration of all interventional trials is a scientific, ethical, and moral responsibility’’. As such, this project was initiated in late 2020 to highlight the need for a clinical trials registry in the UAE that could potentially serve as a regional registry for the Arab Gulf region. As part of the project, I presented my research findings and the existing gap in the literature to the research committee at the Department of Health, Abu Dhabi, highlighting the need for a registry. The idea was positively received, and as a result, I was further requested to prepare a proposal that lays out the ground work needed for setting up such a registry. However, in the past couple of years, the health regulatory authorities in the UAE, including the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi and the Dubai Health Authority, have been at the forefront of fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic, and this project has unfortunately been put on hold since. The presentation on the 16th of March will take us through a brief overview of the project, the process involved in setting up a national registry, and a glimpse at the pitch proposal presented to the Department of Health, Abu Dhabi, in the hopes of gaining insight from the attendees and with a plan to resurrect the project and take it forward to the next step.
