Online Roundtable: Navigating UNFCCC Cop29

Join us for an insightful exploration of the road ahead in global climate governance, in our online session Navigating UNFCCC COP29: A Multifaceted Approach to Global Climate Action. All are welcome to attend!

As the world prepares for the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Baku, Azerbaijan, Middlesex University Dubai presents a timely Pre-COP29 briefing seminar. This event aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the key issues and expectations surrounding COP29, offering insights into the complex landscape of international climate negotiations.

The seminar will feature expert speakers addressing five crucial aspects of climate action: adaptation, mitigation, loss and damage/climate justice, climate finance, and the recent International Court of Justice (ICJ) Advisory Opinion on climate change obligations. Each speaker will deliver concise, informative presentations, collectively painting a holistic picture of the challenges and opportunities facing the global community.

COP29, scheduled for November 11-22, 2024, comes at a critical juncture in the fight against climate change. With the first Global Stocktake concluded last year at COP28 in Dubai, nations are now tasked with enhancing their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to align with the Paris Agreement's goals. The Baku conference is expected to focus on accelerating climate action, strengthening resilience, and mobilising finance, particularly for developing nations.

Our seminar will explore how COP29 aims to address these pressing issues, including the operationalisation of the loss and damage fund established at COP27, progress on the Global Goal on Adaptation, and strategies for achieving more ambitious emissions reductions. The event will also discuss the implications of the ICJ's Advisory Opinion on states' obligations regarding climate change, potentially influencing the legal landscape of climate action.

By bringing together diverse perspectives on these interconnected themes, this briefing seminar seeks to equip attendees with a nuanced understanding of the stakes, challenges, and potential outcomes of COP29.
