What to Bring and Buy for Your University Stay
- Wednesday, 24 July 2024
Moving away from home to start your academic journey in a new country is super exciting (we bet you’re already dreaming about all the new places you’ll explore!). But it can also be a bit challenging. New country, new city, new everything! Don't worry, we’ve got your back with a list of must-have essentials to pack and buy, and some cool tips to make sure you’re all set for this adventure.
Decorative items for your new space
Your new space is about to become your new home. Personalising your new living space with decorative items can make it cosy and inviting. So, think about getting some cushions, blankets, fairy lights and posters from home to create a warm atmosphere.
At Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai, our partner accommodation The Myriad Dubai offers a great blend of affordability and luxury, conveniently located just a 30-minute drive from the main campus. You'll find fully furnished rooms with high-speed Wi-Fi and a lively community. The Student Activities team organises trips to local stores like IKEA to help you grab any essentials you might need for your new home. They provide bedding, towels, and kitchenware like pots and pans, but you can also bring your own if you prefer. Each room comes with a fridge, desk, lockable drawers, and other necessary facilities.
Home comforts
You may get homesick when you first move away but bringing a few things from home can make a big difference to make you feel closer to home. Try packing familiar items like photo frames with pictures of family and friends to keep your loved ones close. Don’t forget to bring some of your favourite snacks from home, especially ones you might not find in Dubai. They can be a comforting reminder of home. Even though Dubai is a multi-cultural city, you might miss some specific things from home, so packing these little comforts can make a big difference.
Cleaning products
Even though the accommodation staff will clean your room regularly, it's important to keep your space tidy for yourself and your roommates if you have any. Grab some multi-surface cleaner for quick clean-ups, disinfectant wipes and sponges to keep surfaces clean and spotless, and laundry detergent for your clothes.
The right kind of clothes
When starting your university journey, packing the right kind of clothes is essential. If you're moving to a warm place like Dubai, lightweight clothes are perfect. However, don't forget that from December to March, it's winter in Dubai, so believe it or not you may get chilly! So, pack a jacket or two.
Most student accommodation, including The Myriad Dubai, have a gym and pool, so remember to bring workout clothes and swimwear. The Myriad offers a large pool and a well-equipped gym, so your favourite gym clothes and swimwear will come in handy to stay fit. If you prefer working out in your room, consider bringing some exercise gear like resistance bands and a yoga mat. Also, pack a few formal outfits for any special events or cultural visits at the university.
It is also worth noting that the UAE is a Muslim country, and in certain areas it is expected that you dress respectfully. Make sure you have lightweight clothes that cover your shoulders and knees.
Basic first-aid kits and medicine
If you’re on any medication regularly, make sure to pack enough for a few months until you settle into your new home. You will need to also travel with your prescription from your doctor in case you are asked at the airport to provide proof of your medication use. Also, bringing basic first aid supplies like band-aids, pain relievers, and antiseptic cream is always a good idea because you never know when you might need them!
Much needed toiletries
Don’t forget to pack your must-have toiletries like toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and toilet paper right from the start to avoid the hassle of buying them urgently. Having your preferred toiletries ensures comfort and familiarity, which can help you settle into your new living space more easily. It also helps you to stick to your budget and maintain personal hygiene as you join a new student community.
Study essentials
Being prepared for your studies is key when settling into your new home away from home. Don't forget to pack essentials like notebooks, pens, and folders to keep your study materials organised. Bringing a laptop and its accessories is also a good idea but check if your university provides a laptop loan service. For instance, MDX Dubai's library on campus offers various services, including book loans and laptop borrowing, in case you need one. Take full advantage of your on-campus resources!
Packing for university accommodation can seem daunting, but with a bit of planning, you can ensure you have everything you need to make your new space feel like home. Embrace the new experiences, and don’t hesitate to reach out to university services for support. Happy packing!
