From the bustling city of Mumbai, India, to the winners’ podium representing Middlesex University Dubai: One gifted athlete’s journey has been a testament to perseverance, passion and the pursuit of excellence.
Meet Ashish Godwin, a determined young athlete, with his heart set on both academic success and athletic excellence. He was introduced to Middlesex University (MDX) Dubai on the recommendation of Farhan Firoz, coach of the university’s athletics team, and Ashish was drawn to the array of opportunities and state-of-the-art facilities at MDX. Now, he is a BA Honours Business Management student with a track record of both academic and athletic achievements.

Ashish gave the following response when we asked him what inspired him to pursue athletics:

“As a child, I always enjoyed running, and I used to go around my neighbourhood, and challenge other kids to races. However, it all began when I was ten years old, when the school meets   motivated me even more, and this is where my dad entered the picture. It was him that inspired me to run and pursue athletics seriously and gave me advice. He was, in a sense, my first coach. My mother used to support me and watch out for my nutrition as well. My parents were a major inspiration to me.”
Balancing the demands of academics, athletics, and social life is no easy task, but Ashish approaches each day with purpose and a structured routine.

“As an athlete, it is hard to find a balance between school, social life, and sports, but not impossible. I have classes in the morning and training in the evening, so right after class I refer to the notes I made during the class for a quick revision, and before training I take a break by socialising with people or meeting my friends. Once I’m back home after training, I make sure to get a little bit of work done and again refer to the notes I took and call it a day. In short, taking notes and referring to them is a very efficient and effective way to get your studies and work done.”

Ashish attributes some of his athletic talents to his faith, providing strength and comfort in times of challenge and triumph. Ashish navigates the ups and downs of student-athlete life with consistency, discipline, and mental strength. As a student-athlete at MDX, Ashish understands the importance of both praise and criticism in fostering growth and improvement.

“I try to take feedback and criticism with a positive approach. I take heed to all the feedback I receive, either from my coaches, teachers, parents, or friends, and I try to reflect on it. When criticised, I try to embrace them as constructive input for growth, instead of taking things too far.” said Ashish.

Ashish’s journey at MDX has been marked by numerous achievements, both on the track and in the classroom. He is the fastest inter-university sprinter, the fastest under-20 competing athlete in the UAE, and a UAE national athlete representing Al Hamriya Sports Club, and he continues to push the boundaries of what is possible, fuelled by passion, determination, and an unwavering belief in his abilities.

“I would like to thank God for this opportunity and for being with me on this journey and giving me victories. Secondly, my supporting parents, my coaches for supporting me mentally and guiding me, and Middlesex University Dubai, for all the facilities and opportunities. And a huge thanks to Professor Cedwyn Fernandes for offering us opportunities for growth, invaluable support, and guidance.”

Ashish’s journey as a student-athlete at MDX is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and the pursuit of excellence. With the support of his parents, coaches, and the university community, he continues to thrive both academically and athletically, inspiring others to chase their dreams and never give up on what they believe in.
