How was your university experience in general?
It was truly unforgettable. Beyond the confines of classrooms, I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of numerous student clubs and activities during my time at university. One of the most rewarding aspects of my experience was the people I met along the way. Through these clubs and events, I had the privilege of connecting with people from diverse backgrounds, which broadened my perspective and enriched my university experience in profound ways. From cultural festivals to academic symposiums, there was never a dull moment on campus.
Do you have any specific good memories that highlight your experience?
I used to look forward to International Day every year. It was a vibrant event, filled with people dressed in colourful attire representing their respective countries. Moreover, the captivating performances and food also added an extra layer to the event.
While I have countless memories, another one has to be the time spent with friends in Block 15 after classes. The student hub was the perfect place to unwind after a day of long lectures.
What was your dream career when you went to university? And did that change in the process of your studies?
Initially, my dream career path revolved around working at a PR firm. I found the field of public relations intriguing and thoroughly enjoyed my initial experiences during my first year. However, as I progressed through my second and third years of university, I found myself drawn towards writing. It was during this time that I discovered my passion for writing different kinds of content. This prompted me to set my sights on working at a media company specialising in copywriting or creating branded content for clients.
What do you do for a career now? (inc. company) and how did you get there?
I work as a content writer at Khaleej Times, one of the leading English dailies in the UAE. I feel incredibly lucky to have landed this position immediately after completing my studies. It was serendipitous how I stumbled upon the opportunity through a job portal and decided to apply without hesitation. Initially, I began my journey as an intern, but over time, I transitioned into a full-time employee.
Reflecting on this journey, I believe that consistently seeking new opportunities has been paramount to my success. Remaining vigilant for openings and being proactive in pursuing them has opened doors. Additionally, I’ve learned the importance of networking and establishing meaningful connections within the industry. Building relationships with professionals in my field has not only provided valuable insights but has also contributed to my growth as a content writer.
How has your degree helped you in your current role and how do you see it helping your progression in the future?
I strongly believe that my degree from Middlesex University Dubai has been instrumental in propelling my career forward. Opting for a media-related field has proven to be one of the most rewarding decisions, as it has enabled me to explore and nurture my passion for writing. The support and guidance provided by my professors have been invaluable in helping me realise my goals. Their unwavering commitment to excellence, coupled with their feedback and the enriching experiences of academic field trips, have all significantly contributed to my development.
Every assignment, lecture, and interaction has been a learning opportunity, shaping me into a more competent and well-rounded professional. Moreover, the emphasis on networking instilled during my academic years continues to be a vital aspect of my career progression.
Looking ahead, the solid foundation laid during my university experience will undoubtedly provide me with the necessary tools and insights to tackle new challenges and seize future opportunities.
