Are you considering moving to Dubai for your university degree? Dubai has the ideal blend of contemporary elements and cultural richness, offering a diverse and inclusive environment with many educational and career opportunities for graduates. It sounds exciting already! But before you pack your bags, let's look at this checklist of Middlesex University Dubai’s must-knows and must-haves!

1. Research and Planning

First things first! Research a little bit about your future university! Get to know the campus, from the facilities to the various academic programmes on offer, and support services provided for international students. You can do this by following along on social media, reviewing the website, and using search engine reviews. You may even want to reach out to current students and get their opinions!

Then get familiar with the local culture and laws in the UAE. This might be different from what you’re used to back home, but understanding these differences will go a long way in adapting to your exciting new environment. We recommend talking with someone who already lives in the UAE, as they can give an honest and lived experience of the lifestyle you can expect when you arrive. Middlesex University Dubai admissions counsellors will also help answer any of your questions about life in Dubai!

2. Visa and Legal Requirements

Before you hop on the plane to Dubai, make sure you’ve got all the important documents in place. Obtain the necessary student visa documents and information and seek guidance on the visa application process. Middlesex University Dubai’s visa process is very easy, and the dedicated Visa Team will let you know exactly what you need to submit in a simple step-by-step process.

Also, don’t forget to check the validity of your passport; in most cases you will require at least 6 months left before it expires in order to travel!

3. Packing Essentials

Dubai’s weather is mostly warm, so make sure to pack comfy and lightweight clothes suitable for the weather. Oh, and don’t forget your swimwear! You’ll want it to take a dip in the sparkling Persian Gulf, or the various swimming pools and water parks in the city! Dubai also has an exciting winter season from December to March. So, a lightweight jacket or two for those cooler days and evenings can come in useful.

Now on to the paperwork: your passport, visa, academic certificates, and any health records you might need are essential. Make sure you’ve got digital copies of these documents as a backup. Consider packing power adapters for electrical outlets to ensure your electronic devices can be used in Dubai (the UAE uses G type plugs, which are also used in the UK).

4. Accommodation Options

Research accommodation options well in advance. Many universities offer on-campus housing, but there are also private rental apartments and shared accommodations available. Middlesex University Dubai has a partner accommodation provider called The Myriad, which offers shared or private rooms, with comfortable amenities including an indoor and outdoor gym, cinema, arcade, library, and swimming pool.

Think about what's important to you—how close you want to be to campus, what amenities you need, and, of course, sticking to your budget. With a little research, you'll find the perfect place to call home. If you are interested in using the university accommodation, the Admissions Counsellor can advise you on how to book a spot and pay a deposit before you arrive in Dubai. They can even pick you up from the airport and take you straight to your new home!

5. Healthcare and Insurance

Health insurance is a must-have in Dubai. Check with your university on health insurance for students and get to know the healthcare space in the city. Middlesex University Dubai’s Visa Team will register you for student insurance once your visa process has been completed.
Hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies are where to go if you're feeling under the weather. It's all about staying healthy and knowing where to go. If you have specific medication needs, make sure to bring your prescription with you for ease when visiting a new doctor or pharmacy. You may also need to provide this at the airport if you are travelling with medications.

6. Cultural Adaptation

Dubai is home to a vibrant community of people from around the world with various cultural backgrounds. Embrace cultural differences and show some love for the local customs and traditions. Try picking up some Arabic phrases to connect with the locals and to immerse yourself in local activities and events. If you don’t know any Arabic: don’t worry! Most people use English fluently and as the country is so multi-cultural, communication is usually very easy.

7. Transportation

When it comes to getting around town, Dubai has a well-developed public transportation system, including metros, buses, and taxis. Public transport in Dubai is very affordable. Familiarise yourself with the routes, schedules, and fare structures for a hassle-free journey.

Top tip! Grab yourself a Nol card, which is a rechargeable smart card used for public transport payments. Middlesex University Dubai students can even register through the university for a special student discount, which makes traveling with your Nol Card even cheaper.

8. Budgeting and Finances

Plan out a budget to keep your spending in check, from accommodation, food and transportation to having fun on leisurely days. Dubai's got some awesome deals waiting for future students like you. Make use of the student discounts and special offers available at restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues in Dubai.

Setting up a bank account when you arrive will be a priority, but this should be an easy process. Simply visit a branch of any of the bigger banks in the UAE such as ADCB, Dubai Islamic Bank, Emirates NBD, Mashreq, First Abu Dhabi Bank, HSBC or more. They will advise you on how to open an account that works for you!

9. Safety and Security

Dubai is considered a very safe country for both residents and visitors and frequently tops global lists for being one of the safest places to live.  As a new student in a different country, it is always advisable to take some basic precautions to stay safe and sound. Get to know the important numbers, like emergency hotlines and find out where the nearest police stations, hospitals, and embassy or consulate offices are. It's all about being prepared and knowing who to call if you need a helping hand. If you are staying in the Middlesex University Dubai accommodation The Myriad, you will have security and an advisor on site to help you should you need it.

10. Making the Most of Your Experience

Get involved in student clubs, societies, and all the exciting extracurricular activities. It's the perfect way to make friends and enjoy your academic journey. Don't forget to explore Dubai's hotspots, from jaw-dropping landmarks to hidden gems. Use your free time to make memories that'll last a lifetime!

Dubai is an amazing place to live and study, and we know you will have the time of your life. Just ensure you are as prepared as possible and have everything you need to settle into your new exciting life in one of the world’s most advanced and dynamic cities! Middlesex University Dubai supports our students at every step of the way!
