Shyam emphasises the importance of setting goals for every student, regardless of whether they are short or long term.

Let's delve into Shyam's experience at MDX and hear firsthand about his journey.

Shyam Sathish Kumar
BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance
Class of 2023

How was your university experience with MDX?

My university experience was great overall! Despite the challenges, I got the chance to participate in academic and extracurricular activities which were very enjoyable and rewarding.

Do you have any memories that highlight your experience?

Being the captain of the table tennis team at MDX gave me some of my best memories. I've always been passionate about table tennis, and my enthusiasm only grew as a result of my participation in numerous intra- and inter-university contests and tournaments.

From an academic perspective, I’m one of the founding members of the Financial Modelling Club at MDX, where I hosted workshops for students to build and enrich their financial modelling skills and helped them attain the Foundations in Financial Modelling Certification.

What was your dream career when you started university, and did that change in the process of your studies?

I have always been interested in Accounting and Finance and I had a general idea that I wanted a career within this field before even joining university. However, I had no clue about the variety of options and niche career paths I could pursue. Studying at MDX gave me exposure and knowledge about various pathways within Accounting and Finance, and my dream career changed over time as I studied different modules and interacted with different professionals.

What do you do for a career now, and how did you get there?

I’m currently a Financial Consultant at Crowe UAE. Upon applying to multiple opportunities ranging from internships to full-time roles, I got this role after going through their interview process. I took up this role as my first job as I believe that working for an international auditing and accounting firm, which happens to be one of the top 10 largest firms in this sector globally, would benefit my career progression.

How has your degree helped you in your current role and how do you see it helping your progression in the future?

All the modules were helpful in forming a strong foundation in Accounting and Finance with modules in years 2 and 3 having the greatest contribution. MDX also gave me a huge advantage by allowing me to proceed with my ACCA examinations while in university. Having completed my ACCA and becoming an affiliate gave me an advantage in the job market. It allowed me to display my competence and gave employers the impression that I was capable as a professional.

Do you have a message for current students and next year’s graduating students?

My advice to them would be to have short-term or long-term goals, whether academic or passion-based, that are fulfilling and constantly motivate your effort towards achieving them, regardless of whether it's a hobby or a list of medium goals.
