Law students triumph at Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition
- Tuesday, 15 March 2022
We are thrilled to announce that Middlesex University Dubai has once again been declared the UAE Qualifying Round Champion of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition! Congratulations to our amazing LLB Law students, Noorah Suhaib Mohamed, Margery Astrid Adricula and Bernie Sugano, who will represent the UAE in the virtual international rounds later this month, after having triumphed in the qualifying rounds on Tuesday 1st March 2022.
During the competition, teams were challenged to solve an international controversy based on a fictional dispute before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. The Jessup Moot is the world’s oldest and largest moot competition, with more than 700 law schools from 100 different countries participating.
At the start of their preparations, the MDX Dubai Jessup team conducted extensive research on both classic and emerging areas of Public International Law. After months of formulating submissions and fine-tuning their pleadings, the team successfully produced excellent Applicant and Respondent memorials in January 2022. The in-person national round of Jessup was an extraordinary experience for the MDX team. It was a culmination of months of hard work beginning in October 2021, and truly displayed the team’s dedication.
After a challenging first round, the MDX team brought the full range of their skills in the second round to secure a victory. They also successfully won the Best Memorial award, with Margery Astrid Adricula winning the Second Best Oralist Award.
We are extremely grateful to the team’s coach Ivan Korotkov. This success is a testament to his dedication, passion and support. Ivan also coached our team for the ICC Mediation Competition and has coached a number of our moot teams in previous years. He has played a key role in many of our Mooting successes in this and previous academic years. Students have repeatedly stressed Ivan’s outstanding contribution and how grateful they are to him.
We cannot wait for the MDX team to represent us in the virtual international rounds later this month!
