Middlesex University Dubai Insights Lab kicks off ‘Roads and Transport’ Research Hackathon with RTA and Dubai Taxi Corporation

  • Thursday, 6 May 2021

Middlesex Insights Lab, as part of MDX Dubai’s Centre For Innovation In Human Experience (CIHx), has successfully launched a landmark ‘Roads and Transport’ research hackathon in partnership with Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC) and the Dubai government’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Middlesex Insights Lab and Beinex got together on Sunday with representatives from RTA and DTC to launch the live public transport data set, which includes insights into location, taxi trips, vehicle speed, basic income and more. All stages of the hackathon are entirely online, making it is the first hackathon of its kind where there is a special focus on taxi data and public transportation.

The objective of the hackathon is open-ended. The only requirement for participating teams is to use Analytics, Machine Learning, or Visualisations to pull out valuable insights from the data and build products that could enhance the efficiency of public transportation in the UAE and add business value to RTA and DTC operations. Teams will be required to present their model and application or dashboard to the judging panel in July.

Taking place over a two-month period, the entire hackathon will also function like a virtual internship opportunity, with several training sessions organised for selected candidates alongside access to mentoring. All candidates who are shortlisted after proposals are submitted will receive an internship certificate from the Middlesex Insights Lab.

Since registration opened in March the competition has seen a huge response, with over 230 teams made up of students, professionals and freelancers from across the world having applied to compete. The winning teams are entitled to a cash prize of AED 3,500 and an opportunity to present their solutions to RTA and DTC during the final stage.
