The prestigious Mock United Nations Conference and Competition was hosted by BITS Pilani on the 6th and 7th of March, 2015. The Mock United Nations Conference is primarily a simulation of the various activities of the United Nations, and has provided the participants with the platform and the academic opportunity to learn diplomacy, delegation and international relations, engage in public speaking and debate, and exhibit writing skills, within the framework of country roles provided by the host. Participants at the Mock United Nations are typically placed in committees replicating the General Assembly (the DISEC), the Security Council, and the Human Rights Council, which are affiliated with the United Nations, in addition to being assigned to countries. Middlesex University representatives included Daaniyaal Ahmed, Fatema Irfan, Giannina Feldbauer, Mihika Arun, Mustafa Zoher and Shifali Singh, who represented countries such as Spain, Iran and the United Arab Emirates across the various committees. Over the span of two days, the conference saw heated debates over the topics of ‘Disarmament of Nuclear Weapons in Ukraine,’ ‘Rights concerning the LGBT community,’ in the General Assembly and the Human Rights Council respectively. Further, students were earlier asked to submit position papers representing the viewpoint of their country after intensive research, and every participant was also required to present a speech on the topics.
The award ceremony saw Middlesex University being conferred with four of nine titles; with Daaniyaal Ahmed being declared as the Best Delegate, Mihika Arun winning for Best Position Paper, and Honourable Mentions being presented to Mustafa Zoher and Shifali Singh for Best Overall Delegates based on their performance and decorum. It was truly an enriching experience for the participants who learned the dynamics of critical thinking, leadership as well as teamwork in the political context. The club extends its gratitude to Ms. Dragana Symons, Ms. Racquel Warner and Ms. Anuradha Vyas for their constant support, as well as the club President, Aditi Surendranath for her commitment and training. Well done team Fearless
