Middlesex University Dubai Honorary Doctorate Awards and Recipients
Middlesex University Dubai follows a highly selective award policy to ensure that Honorary Doctorate awards are given to the most deserving candidates, distinguished individuals who merit special recognition for genuine accomplishment and distinction in a field or activity consonant with its mission.
The Academic Board of Middlesex University awards honorary degrees in recognition of the recipient’s commitment to social, economic and national causes, and support for cultural diversity. Comprehensive policies and stringent evaluation criteria guide the university’s decision in approving all honorary degrees, which ensures that Honorary Degrees are awarded to individuals who make exceptional contributions to their profession, community or directly to the university.
Since establishment in 2005 Middlesex University Dubai has bestowed Honorary Doctorates to the following recipients:
In 2015, The Honorary Doctorate was awarded to : Mr. Paul Griffiths , C.E.O of Dubai Airports
Paul joined Dubai Airports as its first CEO in October 2007, and is responsible for the operation and development of Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum International-Dubai World Central (DWC) airport, soon to be the worlds largest.
Prior to moving to Dubai, Paul was Managing Director of London’s Gatwick Airport, the second largest airport in the UK.He also spent 14 years with the Virgin Group, working closely with Sir Richard Branson as a Board Director of the Virgin Travel Group. Prior to this, he spent four years in Hong Kong developing the marketing, commercial planning and technology functions for the then start-up airline Dragonair.
Since joining Dubai Airports as CEO, he orchestrated the launch of Terminal 3 at Dubai International, the worlds largest Airport Terminal, and the opening of Concourse A, the world’s first purpose-built A380 facility. With these developments Dubai international Airport now hosts the most international passenger traffic in the world. Next, Paul will lead efforts to completely re-design and set new standards for the airport passenger experience as part of the US$32 billion expansion of the next phase of Dubai World Central.
In addition to his high profile career, Paul has managed to become a prolific Musician, a passion he shares with his wife Joanna.
He started to learn to play the organ at the age of 10 and later studied both music and computer science. Having aspired to train as a Cathedral Organist, he was highly placed in several national competitions, and has since been a Fellow, Council member, Chairman of the Executive Committee and Vice President of the Royal College of Organists.
In commemoration of his services to British prosperity in the UAE and to music, it was announced this June, that Paul will become a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List of 2015.
In 2015, Another Honorary Doctorate was awarded to : His Excellency Engineer Essa Al Haj Al Maidoor, the Deputy Director-General of Dubai Municipality
His Excellency Engineer Essa Al Haj Al Maidoor, the Deputy Director-General of Dubai Municipality, and one of the leading strategic authorities of the Emirate of Dubai.
Prior to his current appointment, he was the Director-General of the Dubai Health Authority, where he was responsible for the overall strategy of the health sector in Dubai.
Before his post at Dubai Health Authority, he held posts of Assistant Director for Engineering and Planning and Assistant Director for General Projects with Dubai Municipality.
His Excellency earned his Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Utah State University.Since 2010, he has held the post of the President of the Society of Engineers in the UAE.
He has also been a member of several esteemed national and international committees including board member of the Emirates association of the talented board member of the World Center for the Cultivation of Salt, Chairman of the Infrastructure committee and Green building committee in Dubai municipality, and member of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy.
In recognition of His Excellency’s inspiring leadership, dedication, commitment toward the development of Dubai and the UAE.
In 2011, the Honorary Doctorate was awarded to: Mr. Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline
Emirates Airline President, Tim Clark was bestowed with an Honorary Doctorate award for his exceptional long term contribution to the development and growth of the aviation industry in the U.A.E, as well as internationally and his commitment to humanitarian and charitable causes.
Mr. Clark joined Emirates Airline in 1985 as the Head of Airline Planning and in 2003 took over as President. He has contributed greatly to the development of Emirates Airlines from a two aircraft operation, to it now being one of the world’s largest and most profitable network carriers, operating more than 150 wide bodied jets to 102 cities worldwide (2010).
Mr. Clark helped found, and is Chairman of, the Emirates Airline Foundation which is committed to humanitarian and charitable causes and aims to improve the quality of life for children worldwide including access to food, medicine, housing and education.
The newly awarded Dr. Tim Clark gave an inspirational speech to graduates, encouraging them to “keep the passion”, and to work hard.
In 2010, the Honorary Doctorate was awarded to: Mr. Misho Ravic, the founder of Middlesex University Dubai and Co-Chairman of Middlesex University Dubai’s Board
Middlesex University London has conferred an Honorary Doctorate on the founder of Middlesex University Dubai and Co-Chairman of Middlesex University Dubai’s Board, Mr. Misho Ravic. Doctor of the University is the University’s highest honour. The Honorary Doctorate was awarded during the graduation ceremony which took place in London on July 6, 2010 . Presiding over the ceremony was the Vice Chancellor Professor Michael Driscoll, in the presence of Deputy Vice Chancellor Terry Butland, dignitaries, faculty, graduates and parents.
In early 2004, Mr. Ravic embarked on a journey with Middlesex University to establish London’s first and only campus in the United Arab Emirates. He chose Middlesex University, not only for the quality of its programmes and teaching, but also for the unique diversity of its student and staff population as well as its outstanding record. Mr. Ravic partnered with Middlesex University to establish a great success story in Dubai, and they both did, as evident in today’s strength of the university.
Mr. Ravic’s passion for education is renowned. He believes in quality and practices it. His extraordinary contributions to the field of higher education, health, and socially responsible business are seen across a number of countries and variety of critical contexts. He is the man behind many success stories.
On receiving his doctorate Mr. Ravic said “Middlesex University is unique in its pioneering vision and global outlook. It is an international university with roots in London. This inclusive vision has always set it apart from other universities and firmly established its position as a leading British university for the future. I found myself in an ideal situation to partner with Middlesex University and be a part of this innovative vision.” “Thank you for extending me the great privilege of a Middlesex University Honorary Doctorate. I am deeply touched, and I accept this honour with a sense of immense pride and also humility”, added Mr. Ravic.
Since 2004, the Middlesex University Dubai community has grown to more than 1,400 students enrolled in 28 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including Media, Psychology, Education, Business, Tourism, International development and Information Technology. This October, Middlesex University Dubai is introducing five new programmes, including the BA Honours Journalism and Communication Studies, BA Honours International Business, BA Honours Marketing, MSc Applied Psychology and MSc Computer Network Management.
In 2009, the Honorary Doctorate was awarded to: Her Excellency Maryam Mohammed Khalfan Al Roomi
Her Excellency Maryam Mohammed Khalfan Al Roomi, Minister of Social Affairs in the UAE was bestowed with the accolade of Honorary Doctor of the University in recognition of her dedication, commitment and excellence towards the social development of the UAE and the Arab World and her inspiring community leadership.
As one of the most senior women in the United Arab Emirates’ government Her Excellency has made huge contributions to the well-being of women in the UAE through her involvement in the Ministry of Social Affairs’, and to the lives of disabled people through her work in the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.
Her Excellency has served in many educational, academic and societal roles within the UAE including; Chairperson of UAE Special Olympics from 1989 to 1994, Director of Abu Dhabi’s Handicapped Rehabilitation Center and Director of Center for Special Needs within the Ministry of Labor & Social Affairs from April 1984 to February 1999 and Chairperson of The Higher Advisory Committee for The Women Higher Colleges of Technology-Abu Dhabi during the period of 1990 – 1994.
Prior to becoming Minister of Social Affairs in 2006, her Excellency was the Under Secretary of the Labour and Social Affairs Ministry a position which she held from 1999. She also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature from the UAE University in 1980 Her Excellency Mariam Al Roomi thanked Middlesex University for the honor and attributed her achievements to the encouragement, support and trust of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
In 2008, the inaugural Honorary doctorate was awarded to: His Excellency Sultan ahmed Bin Sulayem
His Excellency Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman of Dubai World, was bestowed with the accolade of Honorary Doctor of the University in recognition of his dedication, commitment and excellence towards the economic development of the UAE and the Arab World and his inspiring community leadership.
The Sulayem family has been one Dubai’s most prominent business and political families since at least the early 20th century. Ahmed bin Sulayem’s father was a key advisor to Dubai’s ruling Maktoum family.
His Excellency has a distinguished business career having been instrumental in the development of the Jebel Ali Fee Zone. In fact he was the founding Chairman in 1985. He also helped establish Nakheel, a property development company, which is a Dubai World subsidiary. His Excellency holds a B.S. in Economics from Temple University in the United States His Excellency Sultan Bin Sulayem thanked Middlesex University for the honour and attributed his achievements to the encouragement, support and trust of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. “Sheikh Mohammed’s vision for the glory of Dubai is the driving force behind all achievements in the emirate. This honour inspires me to work harder for a bigger, better future for our nation. It is recognition of Dubai World’s role as an engine of growth. Dubai World’s success is a result of the team work of our excellent, deeply committed experts at all levels. Their success has contributed to my own achievements.”
