Are you interested in working on a live data set that deals with public transportation? Would you be interested in developing predictive models that could use Machine Learning for enhancing public transport in the UAE? Or would you just love to derive insights from Dubai Taxi data? Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned champion in analytics, all that we need is how beautifully you can derive insights from our client’s data. If this interests you and you are ready to grab some fantastic cash prizes, READ ON!

Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC), Roads and Transport Authority (RTA, Govt. of Dubai), SAS, Beinex, and Middlesex Insights Lab get together to bring you live public transport data for deriving insights that could enhance public transportation and deliver business value to RTA and DTC


DTC and RTA have shared with us an incredible dataset on public transportation. It includes various aspects like taxi trips, location (latitude and longitude), vehicle speed, shared rides, basic income, extra income, and others. The objective is open-ended; the only requirement is to use Analytics, Machine Learning, or Visualizations to derive insights and make products that could link to transportation efficiency and add business value to Dubai Taxi Corporation and RTA. The entire hackathon is like a virtual internship opportunity as there will be several training sessions organized for the selected candidates.

Final Deliverable: Oral Presentations and oher supporting End Product (either an application, dashboard, or ML/AI code)

  • Individual or Pair Registration on MDX Insights Lab website: 25th March 2021 –Registrations Open
  • Closing of online registrations: 30th April 2021
  • Hackathon Data Set  Release Event and opening ceremony: 2nd May 2021
  • Proposal Submission by registered individuals or teams: 23rd May 2021
  • Shortlisted proposals announced + full datasets are shared- 25th May 2021
  • Final Submissions- 25th June 2021
  • Top 5 teams present their work + winners announced – 5th July 2021

All registered participants will be invited to attend the opening ceremony titled “Machine Learning for Roads and Transport” which will provide inputs for the Hackathon.  The release event is designed to understand the expectations from DTC, RTA, and clarify doubts if any. A detailed timeline is given below:

  • Procurement of Data Set: Insights Lab will release a sample dataset to the registered participants after the opening ceremony on 2nd May 2021.
  • Proposal Preparation Time: All participants will get 21 days to prepare the proposal and submit their proposals on 23rd May 2021.
  • Product & Modeling Preparation Time: All shortlisted teams will receive the complete datasets from DTC, and they will have one month to work on their product, dashboard, application, or AI/ML models.
  • Final Deliverable Deadline: They will submit their final artifacts on 25th June 2021.
  • Presentation –Final Teams:  The shortlisted teams will be invited to present their insights and share them will RTA/DTC for the final selection of winners.

The submissions would be evaluated by the business relevance of the insights that could be linked to the overall theme of public transport and business value addition for DTC/RTA. Insights lab faculty members and DTC/RTA will jointly evaluate the submissions.

The top prizes for the Research Hackathon are:

  • 1st Prize: AED 2500 along with the certificate of merit.
  • 2nd Prize: AED 1000 along with the certificate of merit.

Participation Benefits – Internship:

[a] All participants who successfully complete the proposal submission stage will be awarded digital participation certificates.

[b] All participants who are shortlisted after the proposal submission stage will receive an internship certificate from Insights Lab as they will be exposed to various training sessions and mentorship programs.

[c] Shortlisted candidates can attend special training sessions organized by our industry partners that could help in the research hackathon process.

  1. Each team is expected to submit the model (Code or Excel Sheet), an application or a visualization (dashboard) that they derived from the dataset.
  2. A presentation about their final deliverable.

Any work beyond the expectation will be added advantage and will be awarded certain extra credits. 

  1. Registration can be an individual, or it could be done in pairs (max two members in a team).

  2. Each team member should present their valid ID at the time of Registration.

  3. Each team should comply with the regulations specified in the data ethics forms and sign the data ethics form.

  4. The responsibility of the materials, software, and other requirements for developing the insights during the Hackathon lie solely on the participating teams.

  5. The Hackathon is open to any participant willing to experiment and derive insights. It is open to both students and working professionals.

  6. The pair entering for Hackathon must appoint and authorize an individual (“Team Leader”) to represent, act, sign, and enter into submission on their behalf.

  7. Any amendment, addition, or change of rules can be made by the committee at any time.

  8. The judgment made by the committee would be final, and the shortlisting process is completely determined by the Insights Lab team along with RTA/DTC.

  9. Any tool/software can be used for modeling and visualizations.

  10. All participants must sign-up as a member of the Insights Lab
