Law and Accounting Departments welcome students from Erasmus University, Rotterdam for global education exchange
- Friday, 18 March 2022
On 16th March, the Departments of Law and Politics and Finance and Accounting welcomed students and faculty from the Erasmus University, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. These students are on the Bachelors or Pre-Masters Tax Law or Fiscal Economy programmes and are visiting Dubai on a study trip. The visit was organised by Mahine Ahmad, Senior Lecturer in International Relations and Faculty Career Liaison for Law and Politics and supported by Pallavi Kishore, Campus Programme Coordinator for Finance and Accounting Programmes.
Dr. Tenia Kyriazi introduced the students to the university, providing interesting insights on the university and the programmes we offer. The students were taken on a Campus tour by the Student Recruitment team, led by Stuart Kirkham, Manager of Student Recruitment. They had a lot of interesting questions and observations about studying in the UAE and engaging with such a diverse mix of students from all over the world.
They were then joined by MDX students from the Law and Accounting and Finance Programmes and attended a series of guest lectures in the OASIS Theatre, during which they had the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas.
The first lecture was delivered by Nils Vanhassel, counsel at Aurifer Tax, a boutique tax firm operating in Dubai and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Nils is a tax lawyer who specializes in international taxation and indirect tax in the GCC territory. His talk was an introduction to taxation in the UAE and was of particular interest given the fact that corporate taxes are going to be introduced in the UAE in 2023.
The second talk was by John Gruson, lecturer and researcher at the Erasmus University Rotterdam (Erasmus School of Economics and Erasmus School of Law). John also works within the Indirect Tax team of Deloitte Netherlands. His talk offered an introduction to the EU Value Added Tax and the Netherlands.
The final speaker was Ibrahim Jabri, lecturer in Tax Law at the Erasmus School of Economics, with expertise on Data & Tax. He has worked in both the private and public sector in areas around tax law.
This event was a great opportunity for both students and faculty at Middlesex to meet their counterparts from Erasmus University and to share and exchange ideas on areas of law and taxation. It was also an opportunity for the university to develop relationships with universities abroad. Aurifer Tax and the Department of Law and Politics are already industry partners, and we continue to build on this relationship.
