Fintech competition for students bridges the knowledge gap between science, technology and finance

  • Sunday, 19 December 2021

Middlesex University Dubai hosted the fourth edition of the fintech competition Technovation on 13th December 2021.

This prestigious and highly anticipated student competition aims to facilitate innovation in financial services and technology and came out of a strategic collaboration between our Computer Engineering and Informatics (CEI) and Accounting and Finance departments.

With students from both departments presenting their business ideas and innovation prototypes, the event brought together students from across the University and helped to promote cross-curriculum learning and understanding. As a result, our Accounting and Finance students gained insight into the use of technology and our CEI students learnt applicable financial concepts.

Before the presentation phase, participating students first attended a workshop conducted by Jaspreet Singh, Lecturer and Engie Bashir, Senior Lecturer, to explore how technology can be used in financial services. The workshop also delved into the different prototypes available to help the students demonstrate their ideas in the final innovations showcase.

Five teams then presented their innovation prototype to a panel of esteemed industry judges: Mr. Krishna Kumar, Senior Director at Cognizant; Mr. Atif Ahmed, Data Scientist at Emirates NBD; and Mr. Judhi Prasetyo, Lecturer Computer Engineering & Informatics at Middlesex University Dubai.

All teams won admiration and praise from the judges for their excellent innovative ideas, for handling the questions put to them thoughtfully, and for demonstrating a deep knowledge of their subject area.

Yvette Yashavantha, Amina Haris, Divyansh Sharma and Chelston Braganza were declared the winning team. Mohtesham Ali, Muhammed Junaid, Shane Abraham, and Syed Hasan were declared the runners-up of the competition. The competition was conceived and organised by Dr. Fehmida Hussain, Dr. Vijaya Kumar and Mr. Jaspreet Singh Sethi and was sponsored by Al Futtaim Logistics.
