“Thank you for an insightful experience!” said first year tourism student Iman Ahmed Osman Mahmoud after the field trip to ‘old’ Dubai. Students in the first year of the BSc (Hons) International Tourism degree at Middlesex University Dubai recently visited and investigated heritage tourism at various sites in Dubai, including Bastakiya, Dubai Museum and the Old Souks at Al Fahidi. The field trip was organized as part of the First Year Tourism and Society module, and allowed students the opportunity to visit these important heritage, make observations and reflect on these afterwards in class discussion.
Kevin Hannam, PhD, Professor of Tourism Mobilities at Middlesex University Dubai added: “This was an extremely worthwhile visit that allowed the students to reflect on their own observations and people’s emotional attachments to different heritage places.” The students analysed their observations in terms of scales of activity/passivity and emotional connection/disconnection. They concluded that Bastakiya allowed visitors to gain the most insights as they were able to interact with people of different backgrounds and visit small and interesting attractions.
