QAA confirms quality and standards of Middlesex University's higher education provision

Middlesex University has had the quality and standards of its provision confirmed by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) whose review was recently published on its website.

A team of QAA reviewers visited Middlesex University in October 2015 and judged that its academic standards, the quality and enhancement of its student learning opportunities, and the quality of information about its learning opportunities all meet UK expectations.

Professor Tim Blackman, Middlesex University Vice-Chancellor said: “We’re delighted to have successfully met all of the QAA’s expectations and to have the quality and standards of our provision for students reaffirmed.

“Students come first at Middlesex University and this focus comes across in the review  with our innovative use of exceptional students and graduates to support other students’ learning, which reviewers singled out as good practice along with our use of benchmarked targets to underpin the high quality of our courses.

The review identifies a number of examples of good practice. These include:

  • The Graduate Academic Assistant and Student Learning Assistant schemes which foster student engagement in their academic experience
  • The transparent use of benchmarked targets, based on robust data, which strengthens the annual monitoring process

Professor Waqar Ahmad, Middlesex University Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, said: “The QAA has confirmed our high academic standards and endorsed the rigour of our processes for the approval of taught programmes and research degrees, which we apply consistently to meet UK threshold requirements and the demanding standards of our own frameworks.”

Dr Cedwyn Fernandes, Director at Middlesex University Dubai, reported that there was a considerable amount of collaboration between campuses in Dubai and London, even though the reviewers weren’t scheduled to visit the Dubai campus in person. “Our campus is integrated with academic provision in London. In fact this latest report re-affirms some of the strengths highlighted by the QAA when they visited several institutions in the UAE, including Middlesex, as part of the Transnational Education Review in 2014. The pastoral and academic support provided to students by Middlesex Dubai was a particular strength noted by the QAA then.”

QAA's Higher Education Reviews are carried out by experts from other universities and colleges. Every review team includes a student reviewer, because QAA believes that students should be partners in the quality assurance of their education.

A successful review means that the University can display the QAA Quality Mark, indicating to UK and international students that the University meets national requirements for standards and quality.
