Kathryn Wightman-Beaven, Director of Global Corporate Responsibility at DP World, ran workshops on sustainability, corporate social responsibility and community involvement for international foundation programme (IFP) students. The purpose of the workshops was not to talk specifically about DP World but rather address issues in Ms Wightman-Beaven’s area of expertise to assist students in the field of sustainability, which is their global theme during their Foundation year. This is particularly relevant as many IFP assignments require students to show a basic understanding of sustainability and some of its elements. While students can gain a lot of information from IFP classes and lecturers, the opportunity to learn from an expert in the field is invaluable; for this reason we are very grateful to Kathyrn for spending the whole day with our students to enlighten them on how companies can implement community feedback based policies, which ultimately benefit both the company and its social and economic environment. These sessions formed part of the Integrated Subject-based Projects (IFP0500) module, which looks to afford students the opportunity to problem-solve using the academic skills they learn in other IFP modules. Thanks go out to IFP0500 module coordinator Mariam Abonil who took the initiative to bring Ms Wightman-Beaven to Middlesex University Dubai. This is part of Mariam’s on-going efforts to make the module increasingly relevant to the real world.
