Hani Soubra Visits Middlesex University Dubai
There was lively interaction between Hani Soubra, author and media expert, and the MA Media students when he addressed them on the topic of media representation of Islam on 5 December 2012. He discussed examples of the conflation of Islam with terrorism in the media and traced the origins of this back to as recently as 1979 when the Shah of Iran was ousted by the Ayatollah Khomeini. He also addressed the topic of what he called, “Arabs’ obsession with conspiracy theory” and dismissed regional discourse of anti-Americanism as unfounded, citing Arabs’ support of American educational institutions, brands and travel. His address was followed by a signing of his book Letters to Dahlia: Reflections on Lebanon and the Middle East.
