On February 2nd 2017, the Law and Politics Department of Middlesex University Dubai held a CLPD-accredited family law training workshop for legal practitioners at the Dubai Legal Affairs Department (LAD). The workshop, coordinated by Dr Tenia Kyriazi and Dr Daphne Demetriou, was attended by 25 legal practitioners from top UAE and international law firms, as well as a limited number of Middlesex University Dubai Law students.
The workshop was divided into four sessions. Mrs Diana Hamade, a leading family law advocate and an expert in sharia family law gave a presentation on key issues in relation to divorce in the UAE, both for Muslims and non- Muslims, focusing on the relevant legislation, court practices and jurisdictional issues. The second session was delivered by the Senior Officer of the DIFC Wills and Probate Registry, Ms Mihaela Moldoveanu, who presented inheritance options for non-Muslims, with a focus on the DIFC Wills and Probate Registry rules. In the third session Ms Nida Chaudhry, legal practitioner with extensive experience in DIFC wills, provided practitioners with practical legal advice and options relating to wills and probate in the UAE. The three sessions sparked great interest amongst the attendees, with numerous questions and discussions following the three talks. The fourth and final session of the workshop, delivered by Dr Daphne Demetriou, law lecturer at Middlesex University Dubai, was an interactive case study session. Participants were grouped together and provided with a hypothetical scenario, embedding therein information retrieved from the three previous sessions and asked to discuss and provide some solutions. The session ran smoothly with lively debates and exchanges amongst the participants, as well as with the speakers who provided their own insights to this hypothetical scenario.
In view of the interest and high level of engagement evidenced at the family law workshop, the Law and Politics department is intending to hold another workshop for students and the general public in the coming months. For further details, please contact Dr Tenia Kyriazi or Dr Daphne Demetriou.
