On October 2nd Middlesex University Dubai hosted the 2nd TESOL Arabia SIG Conference and in so doing continued its association with and support of the TESOL Arabia organization. TESOL Arabia, which has around 2,000 members, has been providing professional development opportunities for educators who use English as a medium of instruction for more than 20 years in the UAE. Recent years have seen a move to internationalize by seeking out affiliates across Asia, North Africa and South East Europe. In this particular event the 9 SIGs (special interest groups) of TESOL Arabia showcased their activities and provided presenters towards the programme, which included more than 20 sessions given by academics and teachers from across the UAE and Oman. In addition, 4 members from one of the new affiliate organizations in Tunisia presented via Skype. The Organizing team was headed by Mick King, our IFP Coordinator, who holds the role of TESOL Arabia SIG Coordinator on the organization’s Executive Council. Faiza Umar, our Academic Enrichment Coordinator, represented the Teacher Training and Development SIG alongside our MA Education alumna, Tasnim Saleh, who is Campus Academic Coordinator of our neighbouring institution, SAE Dubai. Middlesex support staff and IFP student volunteers all played their part in making sure the delegates, who numbered around one hundred and included both Middlesex University Dubai faculty and alumni, had a rewarding experience. The event’s success was due in no small part to the continued support given by Middlesex University Dubai to the promotion of academic activity in the region.
