Middlesex University Dubai student wins first place at the Women in STEM Hackathon held in Dubai on the 14th & 15th of January

Leanne D’souza, one of our very talented first year BSc-IT student formed a group with 3 other girls from Jubail University College Saudi Arabia to participate in the Women in STEM Hackathon organized by the Meera Kaul Foundation (Middle East, Africa, India & China) held at Canadian University, Dubai on the 14th & 15th of January (http://www.womeninstem.com ).  Leanne and her group received first place for developing a cultural gaming prototype app in 9 hours. The app they created was called ‘The Unique Hand’ which was a drag and drop Henna game. The application prototype was created using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Photoshop and Illustrator.

The groups received a trophy, certificate and USD $5,000 as seeding capital for start- up of the new venture which they will receive if they go ahead and launch the application. Dr. Fehmida Hussain has ensured Leanne that full support will be extended to take this project forward and in this regard Mr. Jaspreet Sethi has been assigned as a mentor to Leanne.

Leanne will also be making a short presentation in class to share this success with her peers and inspire others to come forward and participate in further competitions.
