On 6th April 2015, Middlesex University Dubai organized Entrepreneurship Day that was partnered by Google and Droidcon. School of Science and Technology hosted this event that had three major components- A business plan competition, Google Education demonstration and Google Design Sprint Workshop.
Over 100 students participated in this event and teams from three universities presented their business ideas – Middlesex University, Ajman University and BITS Pilani (Dubai Campus). Students were then trained by Mr. Saad Kayyali (Google Developer Group, Dubai) to convert their business ideas into working prototypes. This training was part of the Google Design Sprint workshop which turned out to be one of the key highlights of this event. Selected teams were given an opportunity to present their ideas in the final round of extended presentations. Winners of the business plan event were announced based on their overall performance in all stages. First place was bagged by Middlesex university students, with Ajman University and BITS Pilani as runner-ups.
The winners, courtesy of Droidcon (droidcon.ae), were given free passes to the conference and direct entry into the student competition. Mr. Sameer Sortur and Mr.Mohamad Harastani from Droidcon discussed their initiatives and how the students can qualify to be part of the Barcamp on the first day of Droidcon to be held in Dubai on 14th – 16th April 2015. Droidcon is world’s largest Android development conference which will be hosted in United Arab Emirates for the first time.
Students and faculties were given a demonstration of Google Education Platform by esteemed guests from Google and Brams (Google’s partner in UAE). This session was led by Mr. Abdel Wahed Bendaoua, head of MEA from Google who delivered an extremely insightful talk where both students and faculty members asked interesting questions. Mr. Mohamed Al Baroudi and Mr. Mohammed Ramdane presented Google Education platform in detail.
Overall, the event exposed students to what real world business and spirit of entrepreneurship. This would encourage more students to convert their ideas into real business and foster the start-up culture in UAE. This event was inaugurated by Dr. Cedwyn Fernandes, director of Middlesex University Dubai who welcomed all students and encouraged them to pursue their dreams and continue the spirit of entrepreneurship. Dr. Fehmida Hussain, Campus Programme Coordinator – Computer Engineering and Informatics, Middlesex University Dubai introduced students to various IT programs and how students are encouraged to lead their ideas in the university. Dr. Krishandas Nanath, Senior Lecturer in School of Science and Technology played a vital role in making this event a huge success.
