MDX Dubai research seminar series scores its first century!

27/03/2013

The Middlesex University Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Wednesday afternoon research seminar series reached a significant milestone recently when it celebrated its one hundredth research seminar! The initiative, originally set up by Dr. Marcus Stephenson has gone from strength to strength over the years and has evolved into a unique fixture in the weekly UAE research calendar.

Dr. Alun Epps, Associate Professor in Marketing and Research Committee Chair, who currently runs the seminar series (on the right in the image) states that “The whole idea of the seminar series is to share research both inside the university and with our wider stakeholder network. This academic year we have had 23 seminars thus far, many of which have been externals and are currently taking bookings for June 2013.

Research seminar serial number 100 (see image) was conducted by Dr Sanjai K Parahoo of Hamdan Bin Mohammed e-University; Dubai and Dr. Heather Lea Harvey of the Higher Colleges of Technology, Sharjah. These researchers spoke impassionedly to an enthralled packed house about “Investigating drivers of passenger usage of public transport: A SEM approach in Dubai metro”. In their presentation they suggested that the overriding effect of corporate reputation in influencing consumer behaviour in regards to Dubai metro, particularly for younger consumers, was somewhat unexpected since quality has often emerged as the key determinant of value. The implications as well as possible reasons corporate reputation is the primary factor for younger consumers in visible services  were discussed and suggestions were made to motivate the enhanced use of metro services.

Professor Raed Awamleh, Director of Middlesex University Dubai, United Arab Emirates and Pro Vice Chancellor, Middlesex University  (on the left in the image) summed up the great event by saying, “I genuinely look forward to and really enjoy the 4.00 pm Wednesday afternoon research seminars. The variety of not only the subjects covered, but also the research methods used is quite astounding. What Dr. Marcus established and what more recently Dr. Alun has continued is an excellent pan-national model of research collaboration that really puts Middlesex University Dubai, United Arab Emirates on the regional research map!’”

Research seminars run weekly at 4.00 pm on Wednesdays during term time. For more details contact a.epps@mdx.ac
