Q1. What made you choose Middlesex University?

A strong factor that contributed to my choice of Middlesex University is the British Education System, renowned worldwide for its high standards. I have always aspired to study at one of the UK’s recognized universities. Middlesex University Dubai has a good reputation in delivering a high level of quality and high teaching standards. An important aspect in making my decision, was that Middlesex Dubai offers programs that are validated in London, thus ensuring the same standard of academic style. I’ve learned over the years that I’ve made the best choice.

Q2. What aspects of your course did you enjoy most?

Since the start of my Fashion Design Business, I have learned that creativity although important, is only a small part in running a successful business. During my studies, I enjoyed the fact that my course covered so many important focuses. It is essential to have an understanding of what is happening in all departments of your company. Business Administration is a highly versatile course offering knowledge in areas such as marketing, strategic business environment, cross-cultural management, economics, accounting, innovation etc. The program gave me the opportunity to acquire knowledge in such diverse areas, thus allowing me to create a general idea of how a business should operate.

Q3. What is your fondest memory of life at Middlesex?

I have many fond memories at Middlesex. Firstly, I am grateful for the wonderful friends I have made along the way. In contrast to the education system back home in Moldova, I enjoyed at Middlesex that one could freely express their opinion. I found it highly remarkable that our teachers were very open in their approach. I appreciated the open door policy, whereby our teachers would gladly assist and guide us throughout the learning process.

Q4. What one piece of advice would you give to a prospective student interested in studying at Middlesex?

Middlesex University Dubai is a brilliant University with highly qualified teachers and a multicultural environment. I would definitely advise them to take full advantage of the opportunities the University has to offer and do their absolute best. Learn from their teachers, work hard, ask questions, invest time in research, and make valuable contacts. Hard work does lead to success.

Q5. Where has your professional life taken you since graduation?

I have worked part-time during my studies at the university. Therefore after graduating, I decided to apply my experience into opening a business of my own. Since I have always had a passion for fashion design, it was an obvious choice for me. From the start of my business last year, we have been developing several collections for the official launch in September. In addition, we are currently in the process of planning our collaboration with major department stores in Dubai and Romania, as well as several online stores.

Q6. Can you give an example of a time when you put the things you learned at Middlesex to practical use?

The first thing that comes to mind is that cultural differences amongst employees do play a major role in business. During the lecture we were taught that in a business, handling employees can take most of your time, therefore knowing how to correctly apply conflict resolution across cultures can truly save valuable time.

Q7. What made you choose the industry you work in and what are its pros and cons?

I chose Fashion Design because I have always been passionate about this industry. The best part of being a fashion designer is meeting the needs of your clients and seeing their satisfaction with your product. This definitely makes me fall in love with my job more and more every passing day.  Fashion Design definitely allows me to express myself and realise what I am capable of achieving.

However, the Fashion design industry is highly competitive, and one has to be truly unique to succeed in this business. Moreover, hiring the right people, ensuring the highest quality, and developing the right business and marketing strategy, is essential for this business to succeed.

Q8. What are the top three tips you would give to current students and recent graduates who are looking for a similar career to yourself?

Firstly, students must be focused, work hard and acquire as much knowledge as possible, which will definitely help them to move into the next phase professionally.

Secondly, I advise current students to pursue a career for which they are passionate.

Lastly, I can advise to be patient and motivated, as to achieve one’s career goals will take time.

Q9. What one piece of advice would you give to the 17/18 year old you?

I would definitely advice myself to work harder, and take things more seriously. However I have no regrets, since the decisions I’ve made at that time, transformed me into the person I am today. I have grown to learn from mistakes, and not repeat them.
