Q1. What made you choose Middlesex University?
I chose Middlesex University for three main reasons.
- One of my very close friends who is as well from Germany recommended Middlesex University to me as she was studying there as well
- Compared to another university in Dubai, I could finish my degree in 3 years (vs. 4 years) and I wanted to start my career the earliest possible.
- The degree of the other University I checked would have not been accredited in my home country Germany while my degree from Middlesex University is accredited there.
Also, being myself from Europe I considered a British degree as more prestigious and I liked the fact that all exams/course works I am handing in will be graded in London as well.
Q2. What aspects of your course did you enjoy most?
I really enjoyed learning about communication and how to carefully choose your words to achieve a certain result. This really helps me a lot being in business now.
Also, I really liked that I was able to involve my personal interest in my course works or even give my course works a focus so I could reuse it later my business (I remember that at the early stages I submitted a homework/course work with a text, which I later used for my company website.
Q3. What is your fondest memory of life at Middlesex?
Definitely the graduation ceremony. Shaking hands with the President of Emirates Airline, Tim Clark, was a fantastic moment and then receiving my prize as the Top Graduate of The Schools of Arts and Education was a big highlight.
Q4. What one piece of advice would you give to a prospective student interested in studying at Middlesex?
Don’t miss your attendance! LOL
No seriously speaking I always told myself since I am already in class and investing this time, I rather pay attention. It is a waste of your time if you are at university in class (there is not much you can do else in this time) and don’t pay attention. And usually the questions/tasks discussed in class are those asked in the exams.
Q5. Where has your professional life taken you since graduation?
I won the Big Start (a UAE entrepreneurship competition sponsored by Al Tamimi Investments) in 2011 at the same time while graduating. Receiving their generous funding and hands on support I was able to launch my company SO Famous, which developed into Wilhelmina Models Dubai.
Wilhelmina Models Dubai is now one of the leading modelling agencies in the UAE. Yet, as I always love a good challenge and I saw a demand, I decided last year when Wilhelmina was successfully up and running that I would need a new challenge. Therefore, I founded my present company ATPRO (which stands for Attractive Professionals), which focuses on recruiting attractive staff for customer facing positions.
Q6. Can you give an example of a time when you put the things you learned at Middlesex to practical use?
Every day in my communications! I tend to choose my words very carefully due to my studies at Middlesex as I know the impact of my words.
Q7. What made you choose the industry you work in and what are its pros and cons?
Initially I chose the model industry as that was based on my previous experience, which gave me a strong starting point. Now I am in the recruitment industry mainly because I saw a demand in the market, but also as I really enjoy meeting people and helping candidates to find a job (the feeling when you successfully place a candidates in their dream job is priceless).
Q8. What are the top three tips you would give to current students and recent graduates who are looking for a similar career to yourself?
- You cannot dream to big J
- Chase your dreams and work hard.
- Establish your network. From now on. It is key.
Q9. What one piece of advice would you give to the 17/18 year old you?
Good question. If I think back, I wouldn’t have done anything different than giving less importance to boyfriends or parties. Still, I would have worked as a model and travelled the world as this made me who I am today.
